I reckon at this point it’s officially Spring. Or least it would appear so based on the lilacs, Italian plums, peaches, apricots, daffodils, and on and on in bloom here at the house. The jetty sparrows – y’all know them simply as song sparrows – have started nesting, the ‘little’ geese (the Cackling geese, Aleutians, and Lesser Canadas) have, with a handful of exceptions, gone home to The Great White North, and I expect to see yellow balls of fluff, i.e. Canada goose goslings, on local farm pond...
Tensions between Cathlamet leaders bubbled up again last week as a majority of town councilors expressed frustration with Mayor David Olson through a signed “censure” letter. The letter, written by Councilor Robert Stowe and provided to the mayor at the March 18 council meeting, does not carry legal weight or entail direct consequences for the mayor. But it does spell out dissatisfaction with Olson’s actions and behavior. The letter followed several months of marked tension between Olson and several councilors. The letter accuses Olson of cr...
This Document is an official Censure of the Mayor of Cathlamet, David Olson, by the Town Council of Cathlamet due to his continuing and expanding interference in Council work/duties/meetings. These actions include but are not limited too: Initiating denigrating letters/emails/conversations with others including the PUD, MRC and Chamber of Commerce regarding council-member roles, duties and responsibilities; orally casting aspersions on Council Members during public meetings and aggressively interrupting/barking disagreement with statements...
TO THE EAGLE: I am saddened by a recent censure resolution offered by Councilmember Robert Stowe without prior notice and supported by two other Council members. Regardless of the split vote, as Mayor I promise to do my level best to regain the trust of the entire Council so we can resume working together on behalf of the Town we love. I will start immediately by re-introducing a resolution to obtain outside help to restore good working relationships. As to the censure, I invite anyone to attend a Town Council meeting to see with your own eyes...
MIXED BAG. We had a bit of everything this past week so if you didn't like the weather, you just had to wait a bit and it would change. We had downpours and wind, and we had some impressive lightning with some deafening thunder, followed by some sun breaks and sprinkles and clouds and well, it seemed like the weather gods couldn't decide what to do, so they threw a little of everything our way...ha! Fingers crossed we can have April arrive along with the sun and stick around awhile. SPECIAL DAYS. Those celebrating birthdays this coming week...

NICE WEEKEND Well, I hope you were able to get out and enjoy the sunny days. I have to say as I begin this column, it is foggy and I swear those ships tooting their foghorns are about ready to come into my back yard. The sun should be showing up soon. It's hard to get all the yard work done when we only get a few days of decent days in a row, not to mention those projects that require more than a day or two to accomplish. Then again, we are just into the first week of Spring, so we shouldn't be too surprised that the clouds are springing a...

To The Eagle: As Wahkiakum High School’s head golf coach, it is an honor to announce that our 2023 state champion girls golf team and boys golf team are back in action this month for the start of another Spring season! Each one of our student athletes have been working hard year round to keep their golf skills sharp and are now ready to secure another state title. But there is still work to be done. Every year the Wahkiakum High School golf team asks its community for support to help supply rain gear, practice equipment, and green fees which en...
There's been a lot of water under the proverbial bridge for 26-year-old Jason Lewis: from Maricopa, Arizona, to Cathlamet, to South Korea, and to the Long Beach Peninsula. A 2016 graduate of Wahkiakum High School, Lewis is currently enrolled in the Washington State Fire Academy, along with 24 of his fellow cadets, including Hannah Mendez and Leanne Campbell, both with the Cathlamet Fire Department. Recently, The Eagle had a chance to slow Lewis down for a few minutes. Get his thoughts on 'life...
Before the colonization of what is now the United States, the Clatsop lived on the south shore of the Columbia River. At the river’s mouth, where the Columbia rushes into the Pacific Ocean, were the Lower Chinook on the north shore and the Willapa Chinook on the bay north of the river. The Lower Chinook and Clatsop had close familial and kinship ties to the Wahkiakum and the Cathlamet, who lived just a canoe ride to the east. Today, the Chinook Indian Nation encompasses all five nations that h...

To The Eagle: The Longview Lodge of Masons, like most fraternal organizations today, is shrinking in numbers. Despite being down to about forty members they continue to finance a bikes for books program that promotes literacy throughout the Longview School District. The program, coordinated by Dan Zorn, Superintendent of the Longview School District, will provide about forty bicycles this year that will be raffled off to students in every grade school in the school system. Raffle tickets can not be purchased, but are earned by the students by...

DOUBLE HOLIDAY MONTH. I always think of March as being St. Patrick’s Day month and April as being Easter month, but that’s not how it is this year. We’ve got St. Patty’s Day on March 17, which is a Sunday this year, but Easter is on the last day of this month, March 31. It’s one of those holidays that does not have a set time, but occurs on the Sunday after the forty days of Lent for those of the Christian faith, so, it’s always changing. There will be special Easter events at the end of this month with the Wahkiakum Fair Foundation...

Golden Daffodils looking up holding springtime like a cup Warm spring rain robins singing in the twilight Full moon rises spreading gold over umber mountains Beverley Wallace Grays River Dad, I stare at the photo suspended on my wall and see my father’s face. His bright eyes gazing down at me, The corners of his mouth slightly lifted; tears filled my eyes. The fire that burned brightly inside you had been smothered. You fought the battle long and hard until all your strength had been washed away. I gazed down at him his decaying flesh had m...
