ENJOYING THE WEATHER? Well, I certainly hope you've been enjoying this dry spell as it certainly has made it nice for all of those who have been eagerly awaiting a time like this so that lawns can be attended to and flower beds cleaned up, etc. Of course, I don't think my ole body is taking it all too well, as it is rebelling just a bit by showing me swollen ankles and feeling some aches and pains that I haven't had since last Spring...ha! The forecast shows some more cloudy but dry weather, so here's hoping that holds true so that our "webbed...

Pyle is the author of 28 books, including "Wintergreen," a winner of the John Burroughs Medal, the National Outdoor Book Award winner "Sky Time in Gray's River" and the novel "Magdalena Mountain." A Yale and University of Washington-trained...
Julia Butler Hansen’s house sits in downtown Cathlamet waiting for the next series of needed repairs. On April 5th, discussions were held in the historic parlor with local and regional representatives who all share an interest in helping bring the home into the next chapter. The Washington State Historical Society was recently given $30,000 to do a study on the work needed to improve the structure and protect the contents that reflect the legacy of Julia Butler Hansen’s time serving as the sec...
To The Eagle, I’ve been very outspoken for a long time about the need for the town to change its governance to allow the hiring of a professional town manager. A town manager would work closely with our competent Clerk Treasurer to oversee the daily town functions that the mayor currently does. He would report to the council and could be replaced if found not adequately performing as required. Moreover, among many other aspects, the professional town manager hired would need to have an understanding (that’s currently lacking) of: basic financia...
Brad Allen Williams was the first-born twin of mother, Sandra Williams, on September 24, 1967 in Torrance, California. His brother, Brian, was welcomed into this world less than an hour later. The fact that Brad was some 50 minutes older than Brain was something he always, good-heartedly, never let Brian forget. Brad’s parents, Sandra and Allen Williams divorced in 1969 and Sandra married David Contreras. Along with David’s son, Michael, a new family of five was formed. Brad and his family moved to Puget Island in 1973 where Brad attended J.A....

FUND RAISER FOR BO WAGES. In case you haven't heard by now, one of our locals, Bo Wages, has been diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma inside his left kidney and had to have surgery in the middle of last month. The good news is that the surgery was a success, but the healing up and recovering has been another matter. He's been unable to work, so the bills are adding up. In order to help his family in this time of need, a fund raising event has been planned. Everyone is invited to the River Mile 38 Brewery at the Elochoman Slough Marina in...

To The Eagle, As Sheriff of this County, I stay away from publicly commenting on Town of Cathlamet politics as much as possible, but on certain occasions and in the name of truth and correcting misconceptions, I must speak. I believe the attack on the current mayor with censorship on his "behaviour" (a Canadian spelling of the word), is misleading at best, and bullying at worst. I have witnessed or have been present on several occasions where the rude, disrespectful, aggressive, and hostile behavior from a councilman was almost too much to...
This weekend's Hook the Hawg salmon derby was sponsored by the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce and the Elochoman Slough Marina. It was a great time for all who attended. Trailers filled the parking lot at the marina as anglers tried their best to hook the biggest salmon. The final winners gathered at River Mile 38 Brewing Company. All participants who landed a fish had their names put into a raffle. Prizes ranged from sweatshirts, tee shirts and hats from the marina to equipment rentals from...

April is National Poetry Month. If you have been thinking about crafting your thoughts into a poem, now is the time. Last Saturday, Robert Michael Pyle led a workshop titled, “Writing from Nature” at a Writers Guild event held in Astoria’s old Alderbrook neighborhood. The daylong workshop was a rare opportunity to learn about writing with precision based on careful observation from one of the northwest’s most revered poets and authors. Two Wahkiakum County poets attended, Ruby Hansen Murray...

I reckon at this point it’s officially Spring. Or least it would appear so based on the lilacs, Italian plums, peaches, apricots, daffodils, and on and on in bloom here at the house. The jetty sparrows – y’all know them simply as song sparrows – have started nesting, the ‘little’ geese (the Cackling geese, Aleutians, and Lesser Canadas) have, with a handful of exceptions, gone home to The Great White North, and I expect to see yellow balls of fluff, i.e. Canada goose goslings, on local farm pond...
Tensions between Cathlamet leaders bubbled up again last week as a majority of town councilors expressed frustration with Mayor David Olson through a signed “censure” letter. The letter, written by Councilor Robert Stowe and provided to the mayor at the March 18 council meeting, does not carry legal weight or entail direct consequences for the mayor. But it does spell out dissatisfaction with Olson’s actions and behavior. The letter followed several months of marked tension between Olson and several councilors. The letter accuses Olson of cr...
This Document is an official Censure of the Mayor of Cathlamet, David Olson, by the Town Council of Cathlamet due to his continuing and expanding interference in Council work/duties/meetings. These actions include but are not limited too: Initiating denigrating letters/emails/conversations with others including the PUD, MRC and Chamber of Commerce regarding council-member roles, duties and responsibilities; orally casting aspersions on Council Members during public meetings and aggressively interrupting/barking disagreement with statements...
TO THE EAGLE: I am saddened by a recent censure resolution offered by Councilmember Robert Stowe without prior notice and supported by two other Council members. Regardless of the split vote, as Mayor I promise to do my level best to regain the trust of the entire Council so we can resume working together on behalf of the Town we love. I will start immediately by re-introducing a resolution to obtain outside help to restore good working relationships. As to the censure, I invite anyone to attend a Town Council meeting to see with your own eyes...
MIXED BAG. We had a bit of everything this past week so if you didn't like the weather, you just had to wait a bit and it would change. We had downpours and wind, and we had some impressive lightning with some deafening thunder, followed by some sun breaks and sprinkles and clouds and well, it seemed like the weather gods couldn't decide what to do, so they threw a little of everything our way...ha! Fingers crossed we can have April arrive along with the sun and stick around awhile. SPECIAL DAYS. Those celebrating birthdays this coming week...
