I think. We did enjoy some nice days earlier, along with some wet ones, but now that it is officially Summer, let's hope the dry and sunny forecast shows up and dries out our webbed feet a bit, ha! SPECIAL DAYS. Those celebrating birthdays this coming week from...

  • To The Eagle

    Jun 13, 2024

Was Maureen the inspiration for the Eveready Bunnie? Attending the life celebration of Maureen Zacher Bockius at the Norse Hall a week ago, I had previously read the very replete discussion of her vast public service in The Eagle and was amazed at how much I didn’t know about her That got me thinking: didn’t Maureen’s career peak at about the same time that Eveready batteries came out with that iconic character the Eveready Bunny, the one that just goes and goes thanks to an amazing energy source? I’m wondering if some bright adverti...

The kiosk offers a local solution to some urgent healthcare needs, while...

DRIZZLE. As another week begins, we've got a very damp Sunday going on, which actually worked out okay, as with all that nice weather, it was definitely time to get out there and do some yardwork and I "feel it" all over...ha! So, this drizzle saved me from going out and doing more work that my body would just as soon not do, so here I am....sitting inside, nice and dry. The forecast is showing more cloudiness and some mild temps, so that suits me just fine. The one day that it got up in the 90's here was just a tad bit much for me! Here's...

  • Wahkiakum history

    Mildred Jones|Jun 6, 2024

One of the coldest winters recalled by Island folks was in January 1930. It had been real cold for a few weeks, and on January 15 the Columbia River froze up. There was lots of snow on the ground and the river ice was from 6 to 18 inches deep. The county communities were isolated for two weeks. Farmers cream cans all filled, no mail came through, unless someone risked his life to get across the river. Groceries ran short in the stores, kerosene and gas were running short. A 9-year old girl,...
