Meeting for the first time in their new office, commissioners of Port District No. 2 discussed real estate and telephone service and approved a contract with a consultant for updating the district's comprehensive plan. Skamokawa resident David Blalock said he and friends are planning to set up a Skamokawa based company to provide internet service. The goal, he said, is to provide service fast enough for people to work online as telecommuters. Current service is inadequate because phone lines are old and overloaded, Blalock said. Satellite...

Editor's note: Photojournalist Genie Cary decided to try for photos of US Fish and Wildlife efforts to capture deer on the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge on March 13. She didn't know quite what to expect. Here's her story: I showed up at the whitetail deer refuge this morning just after 8:30. I rode out to the middle of the refuge with Fish and Wildlife to wait for the "hazing." I was told I could go to take pictures but I might have to work also. I wasn't really dressed for the occasion. Note to...

Other names were the Wahkiakum II, Chief Wahkiakum and James Birnie. Oscar Bergseng owned and operated the ferry. He worked on it for 26 years and campaigned for Wahkiakum County to take it over around the beginning of 1961. The county...

The Department of Ecology is appealing Cowlitz County Superior Court's decision upholding Wahkiakum County's biosolids ordinance, which does not allow land application of Class B biosolids. Ecology had challenged the ordinance, passed on April 26, 2011, by the Board of Commissioners of Wahkiakum County, asking the court to declare that it conflicts with the state biosolids law, in violation of Article 11, Section 11 of the Washington State Constitution. The Superior Court handed down a ruling in the county’s favor on Feb. 22, 2013. Ecology f...
Wahkiakum County commissioners and the county fair board held a workshop Tuesday to come up with a plan to hire a fair manager. Recent Manager Becky Ledtke had been paid through Washington State University's Cooperative Extension Program on funding from the county, but WSU ended that arrangement February 25. Ledtke had exceeded her budget hours by volunteering her services to coordinate a fund raising dinner and program for the fair. Labor laws don't allow the practice, and the WSU employees union also opposed it if the position didn't have...

Our new undersheriff, Steve Marshall, who is a certified rescue diver, certified swift water rescue diver, certified collision investigator and vehicle assault, command search and rescue investigations. To The Eagle, With respect to Craig Brown’s letter in support of the Food Bank in Erickson Park, I don’t understand the need for an ad hominem attack when his case can be made objectively. I haven’t found that personal comments add to any civil discourse. Bur for the record, I am not from Houston unless having lived there periodically when rotated back to the United States qualifies. Mr. Brown could have easily called me a Frog, a Limey, a Libyan or a Tunisian (or, I suppose, a Red, a subversive or a Planning Commissioner). I don’t conside...
