Derrill Lee Trimble, 74, of Tacoma died December 23, 2009 at St John Medical Center, in Longview. He was born in Cathlamet to Robert Lee and Frances (Wood) Trimble on November 24, 1935. He graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1954 and later, graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor’s Degree. It’s been an interesting and rewarding year for the fairgrounds, resulting in an amazing new arena. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve had our fair share of ups and downs (no pun intended), with Mother Nature putting us through the ringer time and time again. In 2008, Fish and Wildlife implemented new policies and strategies for trapping salmon hatchery fish in the lower Columbia River region. Fish and Wildlife's Regional Fish Manager Pat Frazier explained it is because the old methods of rearing fish in pens have had an adverse affect on the growth of wild salmon and steelhead populations in the lower Columbia River. The Wahkiakum County Fair still struggles to survive in a financial climate less hospitable than in years past. Late in 2009, Wahkiakum County commissioners told the fair board they hadn’t budgeted funds for the 2010 fair season.
