    Rick Nelson|Dec 28, 2017

Wahkiakum County commissioners want to reconsider details of a plan to make improvements to the two sections of Steamboat Slough Road along the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge. County Engineer Paul Lacy brought the issue to the board of commissioners on Tuesday, thinking the board might want consider the merits of changing plans. The county has received a Federal Highway Administration Grant to asphalt 1,200 feet of road, pave turnouts and parking areas and install shoulder rock, interpretive kiosks, guardrail and signs. • Diane Tischer retires as county auditor

    Rick Nelson|Dec 28, 2017

After 42 years working on the job, county Auditor Diane Tischer has left the office. She started when she was 23 years old; she held the top post for 28 years. "Where has the time gone," she pondered last Friday in her final day in office. "It doesn't really feel like it's time to retire. "If I had known I would be here this long, I would have written a journal. There have been a lot of changes in the office." The office handles a variety of tasks, chief among them are running elections,...

  • The Cuban embassy problem and elk hoof rot

    Dec 28, 2017

To The Eagle: There is one disease that can explain the symptoms of the Cuban-American brain disease happening to the American embassy workers and not happening to the Cubans in the area. The Cubans, millions of them, were immunized a couple of years ago against a water-borne disease named Leptospirosis, which is also the cause of elk hoof rot. Leptospirosis (lepto) can and does cause malfunction of every organ of the body of mammals except the salivary glands. Americans do not get the vaccine. We do not have a vaccine for leptospira approved...

  • Current fishery situation is not sustainable

To the Eagle: I feel compelled to comment on the article in the Eagle (12/21/17) from the Columbia Basin Bulletin, “Group Tests Fish Trap above Cathlamet.” I attended the Wild Fish Conservancy presentation to the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission and noted several inaccuracies, and the CBB added a few more. 1. Fish traps were never the “massive” harvest technology on the Columbia. They were outlawed in 1936 in Washington and 1948 in Oregon because many, if not most, were vertically integrated with the fish packers, and were being use...

  • Community members urged to participate

    Dec 28, 2017

To The Eagle: I would like to take this opportunity to address a couple of issues: The first is on a personal level. I imagine that many of you have heard that I will be retiring June 30, 2018. It will mark the end of my 24th year as the superintendent of Wahkiakum School District, and I just want to let everyone know what a rewarding and enjoyable tenure it has been for me. My “hat is off” to the board of directors, staff members, students and community members of this fine school district. You all make this such an awesome place to live and...

  • Get ready, the new year is just around the corner

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 28, 2017

A REAL MIX--On Christmas weekend, it depended where you were as to what kind of weather you had, but for those in the areas where snow was falling, they were totally excited to have a white Christmas! Seattle had the first white Christmas in 10 years, so for those snow lovers, the arrival of it was just perfect. For others, it came at a time and place that meant holiday plans were canceled, some flights were either delayed or canceled and some were stranded on highways and byways that were solid sheets of ice after the snow packed down, so not...

  • Foundation set up to help local EMS needs

    Trudy Fredrickson|Dec 28, 2017

Home, Home, Home! There is nothing like Home! It was a wonderful 6,000 mile journey with one of my sisters, a week long cruise with two of my sons and their families to the western Gulf of Mexico, a few days with a cousin in Arizona that my sister had not seen in over 50 years, and a train ride to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. A once in a lifetime dream come true. That said, I missed everything about home and it is so good to be here again. By the way, I must tell the readers that there really is “Hell.” I have visited there, had my pas...

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will confirm that schedule prior to each dig, provided that upcoming marine toxin tests show the clams are safe to eat. Under WDFW's plan, Twin Harbors and Mocrocks beaches will open for digging at noon Jan. 1, extending a dig previously scheduled for New Year's Eve at four...
