  • Loggers topple Lady Mules 45-39

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 27, 2012

On December 19, the Mule girls faced an undefeated team, the Lady Loggers in Onalaska. The Mules led by two at halftime, but due to a weak third quarter, the Mules lost 45-39, despite rallying in the final eight minutes. “We dug ourselves into too big of a hole that we weren’t able to overcome,” said Coach Rob Garrett. "This group has an opportunity to be something special and they are just starting to believe that themselves. They have improved so much this year and it’s really startin...

  • Enjoy family time this Christmas season

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 27, 2012

OFF AND ON--Our weather has been a combination of wet, dry, rainy, snowy, calm, windy and everything else this past week. Forecasters say we may even see a white Christmas. Now wouldn't that be something? Since we are turning our columns in extra early this week, I don't have any idea what showed up for the big holiday, nor was I able to gather any news about anyone's Christmas gatherings. That will all have to wait until next week. All I know is that it was slushy the other day and a few flakes even fell in West Valley before turning to rain,...

  • Exchange students bring new faces to Wahkiakum HS

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 27, 2012

Five young people come to Cathlamet during the fall to join the Wahkiakum High School student population. They each come from cities that easily dwarf our little community. They are funny, bright and articulate. They are: Pedro Murashima Senior, Sao Paulo, Brazil; staying with Bill and Thelia Tawater. Pedro comes from a city of 11 million, a city in southern Brazil that “has more people than New York.” He misses the weather but he does not miss the noise, especially since the road to the air...

  • Commissioners act on new job positions

    Rick Nelson with Betsy Nelson|Dec 27, 2012

Wahkiakum County commissioners had resolutions to consider creating new positions in county departments when the board met Wednesday. Sheriff Mark Howie has created a sergeant's position for the sheriff's department, and Public Works Director Pete Ringen presented redefined positions for his department's staff that, he has said, more closely represent the tasks the employees handle. The county employee's union has adopted the job descriptions for the positions into their contract with the county. The new sergeant would be responsible for superv...

  • Congress needs to be reasonable

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 27, 2012

One has to wonder where our nation is headed when elected leaders ignore practical facts and favor rigid ideological doctrine. I'm speaking, of course, of the conservative fringe of the Republican party in Congress which refuses to consider raising taxes on the nation's wealthiest persons and thereby has hamstrung efforts to address the end of the Bush Tax Cuts, automatic federal budget cuts and other aspects of the so-called fiscal cliff scheduled to arrive in January. It's amazing that a couple dozen members of the majority party in the US...
