Apparently the artists of Tsuga Gallery were not the first nor the only creative people to inhabit their building, situated between Wahkiakum County’s courthouse and Cathlamet Pharmacy. Someone was thinking outside the box when he used a fender from a 1926 Model T Ford truck to hold up a floor joist. Just who and when remain a mystery. Local car enthusiast Ray Badger came in with an old Ford catalogue to identify the fender. He took it home, cleaned it and painted it black, the only color it had...

For the first time in Wahkiakum High School’s history, enough girls have turned out to make up their own wrestling team. Wrestling, traditionally thought to be a sport which allows a man to measure his physical strength against another’s, is so much more. It requires a competitor to stand alone, completely present and completely honest about one’s strengths and weaknesses. It requires concentration, determination, physical and mental flexibility, toughness, and a strategic mindset. This begs...
To The Eagle: Attention all Skamokawa Sewer District Customers: Due to a clerical error, half of our customers (about 30) were sent a faulty newsletter last month stating that they would be billed for sewer services this December, while the other half received an updated letter stating that they wouldn’t receive a December bill. We regret the confusion caused by this mix-up and wish to affirm that our 2014 Fiscal Year needs have indeed been met with the November billing cycle (mailed Nov. 20 due Dec. 20), and that we will therefore not be i...
To the Eagle: In the Middle East, west Africa, and China, Christians are being persecuted and in some areas slaughtered, while in Europe Christian faith slowly fades away, complemented by a rising tide of anti-Semitism. Locally, a brave band of Christian soldiers has arisen, leaping into the breach and striking at the very heart of evil by attacking our county commissioners for nay-saying a nativity scene in the courthouse garden. The commissioners have stuck to their guns, no doubt fearing that capitulation would bring down the wrath of t...
To the Eagle: I applaud your editorial in last week’s paper (Lights, Festival, and a Manger Scene) and at the same time applaud our county commissioners for having the wisdom and foresight to avoid opening the Pandora's box that allowing a Manger scene on County Property would cause. A Government agency has to remain open to all of its citizens' protected status, Race, Color, Sex, Age, Sexual orientation, etc; including Religion. Frederic Carroll Cathlamet...
To The Eagle: I and four other concerned citizens of Wahkiakum County approached the county commissioners about putting up a nativity scene on the courthouse yard. It would go along with the other display already there. We felt the true meaning of Christmas should be represented. The decision of the commissioners was we should wait till next year to bring this up as the season was running short. They also stated other reasons, which we were in total disagreement with. We left feeling disappointed but agreed to wait till next year. We then went...
To The Eagle: In January the Skamokawa Post Office will not only lose half of the open hours but will also lose its leader. The Postmaster, LouAnne Johnson (well she was Johnson when we were in school) will have to retire. The long standing tradition of exceptional Postmasters and outstanding service will be ending. The days of receiving your mail even if someone made a little mistake on your address will be over. If someone should use your physical address instead of your post office box, you will no longer receive your mail even though they...

Several Fire District 4 volunteers were recognized recently for their commitment to the community. Joining the newly created "100 Hour Club" were Captain Mike Wright, Samantha Wright, Chris Garstki and Jack Leavitt. The 100 Hour Club was created to recognize individuals that have accumulated 100 hours or more of weekly training in the course of a year. The District typically trains for two hours each week, excluding Thanksgiving and other holidays, and therefore getting to 100 hours takes a huge commitment. Special thanks go out to these...
Puget Sound marine areas currently open for recreational winter crabbing will close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31, after which all sport crabbers licensed to fish for crab in the Sound will have until Feb. 1 to report their winter catch. State fishing rules require that all sport crabbers with winter catch record cards submit catch reports for the winter season to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) by Feb. 1 - even if they did not catch any crab. With the end of the winter crab season on Dec. 31, all Puget Sound marine areas will be...
WET ENOUGHT?--I'm thinking that most of us got our fill of rain last weekend, as rivers and creeks rose and some of us were facing water over our roads or driveways under water, so it's one of those times which, if we only have a car, we find ourselves house-bound for a short period of time. There were even some areas that a truck didn't matter, you just weren't going through that deep of water. Luckily, it doesn't usually last that long, although high tides did hinder that a bit this time. At any rate, we were inconvenienced but high and dry...

Here we are, patiently waiting for the big night when the jolly old fellow in red makes his rounds. I trust that the readers have all been nice throughout the year and that you will be rewarded. Rudolph is still waiting, with his nose blinking, on my front lawn. It’s probably a good thing too, as Santa might lose his bearing with all the rain and wind we have had. On a more serious note, we must never forget the true meaning of Christmas and the love and compassion it should bring out in all of us. Reach out and give of yourself in this j...
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has extended the deadline to apply for membership on the department's Master Hunter Advisory Group (MHAG) through Jan. 9. Dave Whipple, WDFW hunter education division manager, encourages certified master hunters in Washington - especially those on the east side of the state - to apply for six positions on MHAG coming open next year. The initial application period ended Nov. 30. "We have received a good number of applications from western Washington, but we'd like to hear from more master hun...

It also provides strategies for meeting these needs, and includes a list of proposed public transportation projects within the areas served by the Southwest Washington Regional Transportation Planning Organiz...

Baylee Olsen led the team with 19 points, six rebounds, four assists and one steal. Sam Boyce added 13 points, four rebounds, six assists and two steals. Junior Ryan Quigley stepped up in Wahkiakum’s 52-77 loss to Napavine last Thursday, and proved he could contribute to Mule offense by adding 15 points, all in the first half. Despite nearly matching the Tigers score for score in the second, third and fourth quarters, the Mules were unable to overcome Napavine’s early surge marked by a score of 8-27 at the end of the first quarter. Brandon Budd and Quigley led scorers with 15 points apiece. Zach Brown added 11 more. Hank Ferguson had five poi...
Wahkiakum hosted the Down River Challenge wrestling tournament last weekend with 17 schools and over 160 wrestlers. Luke Stacey, wrestling at 132 pounds, was the first to take home a championship. He pinned his opponent in the championship round to take 1st place in the tournament. Alex Johnson also won his way into the championship round at 145 pounds, to face the same wrestler he lost to last year in this event. This year was different, with Alex dominating from the start and pinning his opponent for the win and 1st place. Rayanna Carlon...
