Friends braved wind, rain, and a little snow to gather inside a bright and warm Grays River Grange on Tuesday for their annual Christmas celebration. After everyone tucked into a potluck dinner, a grange member began calling out winning raffle numbers and the Grange Christmas Band led the crowd in a handful of Christmas carols. Robert Michael Pyle called all the children to the stage for his annual interactive reading of Twas the Night Before Christmas. "What does a mouse sound like?" he asked....

Wahkiakum County officials are re-examining a program for boarding horses at the fairgrounds in Skamokawa. The program was started with 4-H youth in mind, but other horse owners have questioned the propriety of the program. Under the program, participants could board horses at the fairgrounds horse barn for $100 per month and work off the fee by performing 20 hours of community service. The questions came to the board of county commissioners Tuesday. Commission Chair Mike Backman said the county fair board, of which he is a member, said the...
To The Eagle: As I went to get my Christmas lights to string across my house, I discovered they were part of many items that were stolen from my home Sept 6, 2014. I was so aggravated, I wrote this letter. If nothing else, it felt good to vent. After over 100 finger prints were pulled and a year later waiting on them to be examined in Olympia, I was told none were clear prints and could not be used to identify anyone — a total loss and no personal property insurance! I am very grateful, though, that the thief did not "trash" my house. Sue G...

WHITE OR NOT?--As this week began, we were enjoying a break from the miserable weather we'd been having, so we were all happy to see all the standing water begin to recede by Sunday evening. However, along came Monday and that enjoyment we had felt quickly subsided as a strong wind and rain event pounded many parts of our county and others. Trees were falling all over the place, from one county to the other, and that meant there were power outages and telephone outages as well. On Puget Island, one huge loss was the P.I. fire station which...

The Wahkiakum Mules new wrestling coach Frankie Mendez managed to salvage the Downriver Challenge this year after rumors that the program wasn't going to survive took the event off some coaches' calendars. When Mendez found out that only six teams were expected, he got on the phone and started calling wrestling programs. By the time he was done, 10 more teams from all over Washington and Oregon had promised to come to Cathlamet for the event. "Chief Leschi, Neah-Kah-Nie, Kelso," Mendez began to...
Wahkiakum Mule senior Joey Moore spent so much time on the floor in last Thursday's game against Napavine that someone should give him an honorary floorboard if the court is ever replaced. Unfortunately, his bloody knees and assured bruises weren't enough to make up for the damage done by the Tiger's Wyatt Stanley. Stanley, a big physical player, put his head down and scored 29 of his 37 points in the second half, and the Tigers won 77-64. Ryan Quigley, who has turned out to be a consistent...
The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team finally faced some competition last week and split games with one win and one loss. In last Wednesday's game against the Morton/White Pass Timberwolves, the Mules had a slim lead at half-time. Coach Robbie Garrett must have said the right thing in the locker room at half-time because the Lady Mules came out and outscored the Timberwolves by 17 in the second half. The Lady Mules won 63-40. Peyton Souvenir led scoring with 25 points. She also had five rebo...
