Suzy Mackey Photo by Diana Zimmerman|Dec 24, 2013

The Wahkiakum Mule Wrestling team hosted 13 teams from Washington and Oregon at The Down River Challenge on Saturday. With such a large turnout the weight classes were set to 16 man brackets; this puts the wrestlers in a position of having to win three matches before they even reach the championship match. Again, the Mules were down to six wrestlers this week, but still pulled off third place in overall team points. This was possible because of the nine pins the wrestlers were able to achieve. F...

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 24, 2013

WET--As I begin this column covering the last week of this year, we're back to rain with some chilly nights, so with winter having officially started last Saturday, I guess that's pretty normal. Let's all remember to turn on those headlights when traveling in this gloomy, foggy weather, as it's really hard to see oncoming traffic, so let's drive defensively and do everything we can to have a safe holiday season. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from December 26-January 1 are Duncan Cruickshank, Steve Smith, Donald Cooper, Kohl...

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 24, 2013

Some may use the tarot to try to divine the future, but for local resident Christine Payne-Towler the tarot have been a guide to the past and an instrument of healing in the here and now. Seven years ago, Payne-Towler, an internationally recognized tarot expert, moved to the area with artist and publisher, Michael Dowers. They had both suffered painful setbacks in their lives and were ready for a change of scenery, a change of pace, and a fresh start. Payne-Towler was born with a birth defect...

Commissioners of Port District No. 2 will hold a special meeting today (Thursday) at 5 p.m. at the Skamokawa Vista Park office to discuss refurbishing restrooms at County Line Park. Port Attorney Tim Hanigan said bids came in over budget. A contractor has already done some road work, created space for three new tent sites and removed an old storage building, Vista Park Manager Janet...

  • Stop the Federal Reserve and save the economy

    Dec 24, 2013

To The Eagle, What do cigarettes and Federal Reserve notes have in common? Some folks call cigarettes coffin nails for smokers. Federal Reserve notes should be called coffin nails for the economy. Medical professionals say smokers’ lungs start getting better the first day after they stop smoking. The U.S. economy will start improving the very first day after we stop the Federal Reserve from creating our money as debt, that is to say, issuing Federal Reserve notes. The federal government could then create money that would not be owed to a...

  • Secret Santa thanked for lessons learned

    Dec 24, 2013

To The Eagle: To my Secret Santa, The card says who or why is not important. Learn something new every day. Let this be your guide. Pay it forward. Find joy in what you do. My lesson learned is humility! Although I have a lot of curiosity, you are right. The who and why are not important. The road of life led me to Cathlamet in early 2011. It has been easy to become part of this community and I have been welcomed with open arms and made many great friends through my time with Tsuga Gallery, the library, Wags and Vibes and my neighbors. I thank...

The food will help to compensate for the high demand that we’re experiencing during this season. The efforts of Troop 883 are in keeping with that part of the Boy Scout oath that commits: “To help other people at all times…” Craig Brown, on behalf of the Helping Hand Board of Directors...
