The Cathlamet town council adopted its 2022 budget, approved measures for park and sidewalk improvement projects and addressed other issues when it met Monday. Council members rejected a bid for exterior improvements to the town hall. The bid came in two parts, one for $88,000 that included installation of a decorative mural and a second for $74,000 without the mural. The town’s architect estimated the cost at $56,000. The council may call for bids again in 2022. Planned work included improvements to siding and installation of lighting and a...

  • Commission okays early interest saving HVAC loan payoff

    Rick Nelson|Dec 23, 2021

Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday headed into the Christmas holiday on a happy note. Thanks to Treasurer Tammy Peterson, the county will save around $186,000 in interest payments on a $1 million loan used to finance recent renovation of the courthouse HVAC system. Peterson told the board of commissioners that when she reviewed terms of the loan, she wondered if it could be paid off early. When she investigated, she learned of the potential savings on interest payments. The county has the funds to pay off the loan, she said, so she...

  • Jefferson changed property to happiness

    Dec 23, 2021

To The Eagle: I disagree with a writer’s opinion that the Founders could not have intended the Constitution to restrict citizen’s access to the ballot or allow the wealthy to dominate the politics of power. That’s exactly what the founders intended. The new nation may have aspired toward the Enlightenment principles of liberty, equality and justice but there was scant evidence of those in 18th century America. A rough draft of the Declaration of Independence declared the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of property. Jefferson chang...

Julie Kushner, D-Danbury, Pastor Rodney Wade of Waterbury and SEIU activist Azucena Santiago. He was “excited and honored” to speak at the awards ceremony. Later he expre...

  • No religious test shall be required

    Dec 23, 2021
    1

To The Eagle: Article six of the Establishment Clause of the 1st Amendment states “no religious test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.” Article six is, in my opinion, a significant Constitutional flaw. The 1st Amendment would have better served the national interest had it mandated freedom ‘from’ religion, instead of freedom ‘of religion.’ A case in point is the pervasive influence of a dominant religion within the Supreme Court. Six of the nine justices sitting on our Supreme Cou...

Photos by Todd Wilson The Wahkiakum Mules boys basketball team won two games this week and lost one, bringing their overall record to 4-4, and their league record to 0-1. The Mules beat Morton/White Pass 51-45 at home last Thursday. "We always know Morton/White Pass is going to be tough competition," Coach Todd Souvenir said. "We didn't have our best shooting night. It was a really good game to have other guys step up. It was Dom's [Curl] first really good game of the season. He finished around...

Photos by Ian Brandon The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team lost one and won two this week, bringing their overall record to 7-2, and league record to 1-0. They also gained one more player, to bring their roster to nine. Last Wednesday, the Lady Mules lost to Skyview, a 4A team from the Vancouver area, 54-43. "The Skyview game was a blast," Coach Rob Garrett said. "The girls went in with a great attitude and played with no fear. We knew we had to play fundamental and hard or we wouldn't be...

All the lights are up, I hope, and presents under the tree for the cat to play with. Animals are family, too. I hear snow might be coming. Soon we can settle and just be with friends and family to enjoy the day. December is full of activities as we prepare for the Big Day;...

    Karen Bertroch|Dec 23, 2021

In November, the Washington Department of Ecology received a report that an old barge was leaking oil into Deep River, and agencies came together to respond. Last week the derelict barge was moved to the Oneida Boat Ramp. The move required a large crane that lifted the barge up enough to get it onto the shore at the boat launch site. A truck has been there for several days pumping oil/gas out of the barge. All the oil/gas waste will be moved to a recycling process location and the metal from...

The State of Washington, Washington Inter scholastic Athletic Association, and Clark County all decided it was best to postpone the tournament, Mule wrestling Coach Garrett Radcliffe reported. "All of our athletes are disappointed, but healthy," he said. "Wahkiakum School District...
