Pastures after a flood need some special TLC. First and foremost, remove any debris, especially along fence lines and in corners. Do not feed livestock any silage that has been flooded. Horses, sheep, poultry, swine and cattle are effected most severely in that order from damaged feed. Lack of adequate forage could force livestock to eat poisonous plants that they...

The county hasn't been included in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster declarations that will provide funds to private property owners, she said. "This is not a mistake," Tawater said. "Until Wahkiakum has reported enough damage to impact the county we will not be declared. "But the good news is we still have time to report damage. Damage from the December 48-hour storm has totalled nearly $1.23 million for Wahkiakum County. Public Works Director Pete Ringen estimates it will take $800,000 to repair the AG Hanson Bridge over the Elcohoman River at Beaver Creek Road. The bridge has five reinforced concrete girders which span the stream, and a concrete deck sits on top of them. Floods have battered the upstream girder and eroded around a bridge footing. The road department closed the bridge last week to excavate around the eroded footing and reinforce it with large rock...
Storm recovery and newly elected positions were topics of discussion at Tuesday’s PUD meeting. Manager Dave Tramblie reported that the leaks on the Westend and Puget Island have been repaired. He said that reports were filed in a very timely fashion and every leak was documented. Auditor Erin Wilson told the board that the PUD has been in touch with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and a preliminary damage estimate of $40,851 has been submitted. Wilson said that Pacific County has been charged $8,300 for the service of six crew m...

Manager Steve McClain said the loan would be used as the local match to state funds for park construction. The port will make payments of $2,400 per month at 5.0325 percent interest. The term is 15 years. The port had borrowed funds from Wahkiakum County several years ago for a variety of projects but will now pay back the balance owed. In other business, retiring Commissioner Kyle...

"So they are now scrambling to find gym space for their home games," said WHS athletic director Bob Garrett. "Originally our boys’ basketball game scheduled f...

In the past year, many changes have been made at The Eagle. For instance, because of rising postal costs, inserts are now only being accepted for papers delivered within the county and Naselle area. Another change taking effect immediately: Subscribers to The Eagle will no longer have the option of repeatedly giving a gift subscription to the same person. Gift subscriptions will still be available with a paid subscription as long as the gift recipient has never received a free subscription to The Eagle. "The rising cost of doing business is...
The Cathlamet Town Council passed budgets for 2008, updated the library board and acted on other business when it met Monday. Budget action took over an hour as Assistant Fire Chiefs Fred Johnson and Bill Faubion, also city attorney, reviewed department accounts. Two years ago, the Cathlamet Fire Department managed its own accounts, but they have now been merged with town accounts at the request of the Washington State Auditor. This year, the town adopted a new accounting system, complicating the process. At Johnson's request, the council...

The board will consider its findings for final approval of the permits at another date. The commissioners' vote decided in principle that Bradwood Landing met or would meet the applicable criteria for each of its 27 applications for zone changes and land-use permits. Two commissioners questioned whether or not...
