    Rick Nelson|Dec 18, 2014
    1

Wahkiakum County commissioners this year may turn the county fairgrounds over to Port District No. 2 which operates nearby Skamokawa Vista Park. County Commissioner Dan Cothren visited the Port 2 board of commissioners Tuesday to begin discussion of the idea. "We've heard a rumor that the port district would like to take over operation of the fairgrounds," Cothren said. "That could be a win-win for both of us." Port commissioners confirmed they were interested in the idea. "The facilities, okay," said port commission Chair Brian O'Connor, "but...

  • Commission denies manger scene request for a second time

    Rick Nelson|Dec 18, 2014
    2

For the second time in two weeks, Wahkiakum County commissioners denied a request to the addition of a Christmas manger scene to the holiday display on the courthouse lawn. Commissioners also approved a bid to revamp the Puget Island ferry landing to accommodate a larger ferry whose construction is nearing completion; they approved a financial appropriation for the Grays River Valley Library, and they signed a letter to Governor Jay Inslee urging more support of the local commercial fishing industry. Commissioners start their meeting by...

The last Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners meeting of 2014 was a busy one. General Manager Dave Tramblie gave a report of the PUD’s response to the recent storm and the board reorganized for the next year. “The Department of Health re...

  • Lights, festival and a manger scene

    Rick Nelson|Dec 18, 2014

by Rick Nelson I came to work full-time at The Eagle as a reporter in February, 1979. At some point I joined the Cathlamet Commercial Club, an organization of merchants, local elected officials and community minded citizens who wanted to promote fun and prosperity in Cathlamet. At one point in the early 1980's, we decided to hold a Christmas lighting festival and sought permission to use the courthouse lawn, the closest thing to a town square that we have around here. The festival included lighting a large tree and decorating the lawn. A...

  • President of United Way asks for help

    Dec 18, 2014

To the Eagle: This holiday season, as we enjoy family and friends and give thanks, we hope you will join us in remembering those in need. For many of our neighbors, the holidays are a difficult time. They may be struggling to pay the bills, might not have enough to eat, or could be without a safe place to live. Our local United Way campaign supports 23 partner agencies and their programs. These agencies count on your generous gifts to the United Way of Cowlitz and Wahkiakum Counties to provide the services that gives those in need a helping han...

  • By special request

    Rick Nelson|Dec 18, 2014

Little notes: I've been in this business now for 40 years and have learned a few things. One is that it is tempting but ill advised for local elected officials, during their meetings, to toss "story requests" to members of the press. The reporters are there for purposes other than creating an announcement for the elected officials. For best results, officials should contact the news desk during regular business hours. I was on the receiving end of two such requests in meetings I covered Monday and Tuesday. I'll do the best I can with them. 1....

  • Writer says put Jesus back in Christmas

    Dec 18, 2014

To the Eagle: Let’s put Jesus back in Christmas. It is his birthday! He is the Son of God and greatest gift of love who came to earth in human form because He and Father God loves us so much. He came to save the world and will come again soon for those who love Him. Since our christian government cannot acknowledge Him let’s celebrate His birthday and decorate our lawns, homes, and church yards with His nativity. After all it is Christ-mas! For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him sho...

  • Little things mean a lot to writer

    Dec 18, 2014

To the Eagle: How easy it is to criticize when things don’t go well, and how easy it is to take things for granted that do. I have been delighted each morning to go to the front door and find my newspaper placed neatly by the screen. I used to have to hunt through the bushes or look around the yard and often to find it rain soaked somewhere, anywhere but the front door. Thank you Mr. Hess for being such a thoughtful, careful delivery person. I hope you continue your job because I, for one, will sure miss you when you leave. Dixie Swart C...

  • Pray for commissioners; they've lost their way

    Dec 18, 2014

To the Eagle: Last week my neighbor called me and said he wanted to put a manger scene in front of the courthouse and was told no! What? This is Wahkiakum County. Fast forward: The county commissioners told us no. “We don’t want to open the door for others to put displays on county land.” But this is Christmas. If we can’t be proud of the birth of the saviour of the human race, what then? Rewind: You remember good will toward men, go tell it on the mountain, saviour of the nations come. How about, to us a child of hope is born, to us a son is...

  • Port District 1 discusses varied business

    Diana Zimmerman|Dec 18, 2014

At December’s Port District 1 meeting last Thursday, Commissioner Bob Kizziar asked his colleagues to support his efforts to begin advertising for the Wooden Boat Show next summer. “I think the boat show fits into our mission statement,” Kizziar said. “It would be nice to grow the boat show. Last time the chamber paid for almost all of the advertising, it would be good if some of the advertising came from us.” The commissioners agreed and set aside $500 for advertising. Plans to relocate...

  • Council discusses move, resolution supporting gillnetters

    Rick Nelson|Dec 18, 2014

Members of the Cathlamet Town Council had a quick and easy meeting Monday. Three of four different presenters in the new business section of the agenda were unable to come to the meeting. Councilmembers discussed the pending move of town offices from the Scarborough Building on Main Street to a building on the town's old sewer lagoon property. The Cathlamet Fire Department has used the building for storage, and it will need some remodeling, including addition of a restroom, to accommodate the town offices. Councilmember David Goodroe suggested...

  • Only one week left to finish that shopping!

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 18, 2014

CALMER--After last week ended with such windy, wild weather, we can only hope that this week is a bit quieter and calmer, as falling trees and power outages are not something we want to endure again. Many of us were lucky and kept our power on in spite of several power "bumps" but others on Puget Island or in the Cathlamet or west of here, endured some outages. The road to Longview was littered with limbs and one can see the extensive damage to the guardrails as large trees came down and blocked the road and got the guardrails on both sides of...

    Diana Zimmerman|Dec 18, 2014

Poul Toftemark and other board members of the Grays River Habitat Enhancement District are quick to point out that they are getting older and struggle to find the energy to keep doing what they are doing to improve and maintain the area along the Grays River. “We need fresh blood in here,” Toftemark said. “People tell us we’re going a good job, but it would be great if they could come to meetings and give some content.” The district recently experienced an invigorating victory after a long foug...
