The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is conducting a public opinion survey to help identify key wildlife issues to be addressed in the department’s 2015-2021 Game Management Plan. The information gathered from the survey will help WDFW update its current plan, originally developed in 2003 and updated in 2009. The Wahkiaum Mule wrestlers competed at the Warrenton Invitational tournament last Saturday. Eight teams were present from Washington and Oregon. The Mules had only six wrestlers competing that day and five of those placed in the top three. Having half the wrestlers than the other teams, the Mules still placed 4th in overall team points. Outstanding Wahkiakum Mule football players were recognized at a recent awards program. The Most Valuable Player Award went to Mason Mackey. Seth Doumit received the Inspirational Award, and Hank Ferguson received the Scrub Award, which honors a leading junior varsity player. The team votes on the three awards. Thea Linnaea Pyle, 66, of Grays River, Washington, died Nov. 20, 2013, at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria, after 10 years' courageous and challenging co-existence with ovarian cancer. Born Thea Peterson in Seattle on September 3, 1947, she grew up and attended public schools on Mercer Island. H. Robert Olsen, 84, died at his home in Cathlamet on December 14, 2013. Bob was born to Harold and Phoebe (Hansen) Olsen on February 21, 1929 in Cathlamet. He graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1948 and joined the Army. He was stationed in Korea during the Korean War. On February 5, 1953, Bob married Vivian Wika and followed in his father’s footsteps as a logger. He worked in logging with his son, retiring in his 70’s after over 50 years. Johnny Fritzie, 80, lifelong resident of Puget Island and Longview, died on December 13, 2013 at Hospice Care Center. Johnny was born in Portland, Ore., on July 27, 1933 to Nogi and Rae (Petersen) Fritzie. Johnny worked for the Longview School District as a groundsman for many years and eventually retired from there. He was well loved at his work and a caring, generous man to those who knew him. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to translocate up to 35 Columbian white-tailed deer from Puget Island to the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge and the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge for the Columbian White-tailed Deer in 2014 and an additional 10-20 deer to Ridgefield NWR in 2015. Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday voiced opposition to a plan to move white-tail deer from Puget Island to US Fish and Wildlife Service Refuges. The Service announced last Thursday its intention to trap and move 35 deer in early 2014 and and another 10-20 at the end of 2014 to, first, the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge outside Cathlamet and, second, to the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge.
