    An AIDS benefit is scheduled for December 19, at 7 p.m., weather permitting, at Valley Bible Church in Rosburg. Stephanie Wise of Naselle, now a student at Washington State University, is hosting the event which will feature Christmas music by local artists including Carl Wirkkala and the Ghost Town Boys, Natalie Berrios and more.     The timber market downturn that led to last week's news that DeBriae Logging, the county's largest employer, would shut down operations for two or more months will have extended impact, timber industry officials said this week.     The Wahkiakum PUD met Tuesday to discuss a variety of topics. Wahkiakum County Human Services Manager Chris Holmes asked the PUD to work with Health and Human Services (HHS) in creating a plan for energy and housing assistance.     Commissioners of Port District 1 last Thursday agreed to support financially efforts to create a small business park in the Cathlamet area. David Goodroe, executive director of the Lower Columbia Economic Development Council, said the there appears to be state or federal grant funding to construct the park, but there is no funding for land acquisition.     The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team lost 58-51 in Adna last Saturday and held on to defeat the Pe Ell Trojans 70-67 in Cathlamet on Tuesday. The Mules led 26-24 at halftime in Adna, but the Pirates turned up the defensive pressure in the third quarter and outscored the Mules 16-9 in the third quarter and 18-16 in the fourth.     Know Your Government is an annual opportunity for Washington youth to come together to learn hands-on from the inside what makes their government tick, and it is just around the corner. The WSU Extension is looking for youth to represent Wahkiakum County at the annual Know Your Government conference in Olympia on February 14-17. Youth need to be in 9th-12th grades, and either enrolled in 4-H or amenable to joining 4-H to participate.     The Wahkiakum Lady Mules basketball team won two of three Central League games this past week. Last Wednesday, the Mules lost 50-40 to a Napavine Tiger team that played hands on defense. The Mules hung close for the first quarter, 12-8, but turnovers and foul trouble put them in a hole in the second quarter, and the Lady Tigers outscored them 26-15 in the second and third quarters to take control.     Last Saturday, the Wahkiakum Mule wrestlers traveled to Warrenton High School to take part in their annual eighth-way tournament of large and small schools from Oregon and Washington. By the end of the day, the Mules finished fifth in the tournament as a team, had one champion, and reached a milestone as a program. Councilmember John Hannah turned in his letter of resignation Monday afternoon, just a few hours before the council met for its December meeting.
