  • Clinic transition coming soon

    Stevan Morgain|Dec 17, 2009

The saga of the Wahkiakum’s Family Practice Clinic is over. The ‘i’-s have all been dotted and the ‘t’-s all crossed. As of January 4, Longview-based Family Health Center (FHC) will be the new owner/manager of the Family Practice Clinic in Cathlamet. “What this means for the clinic is we don’t lock the doors,” said Crystal Stanley. Stanley is the Wahkiakum clinic business manager. She believes the clinic’s new ownership will bring much needed stability to the health clinic. It also means the Wahkiakum Family Health Center qualifies for federal...

  • What's Happening at the Fair?

    Sarah Lawrence, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 17, 2009

We’ve seen snow, sleet, hail and a little freezing rain but I’m delighted to confirm the fair grounds are still standing. Volunteer Paul Lawrence has been busy, working hard to ensure we’re tucked up nicely for the long winter ahead. With last year’s damage behind us and funding from the county in place, 2010 is looking very positive. I must admit that I am thrilled to confirm that the new fair board president for 2010 is Becky Ledtke of Skamokawa. Becky has been an active volunteer within the community for many years, including 10 years a...

  • Stoves make the smoke

    Stevan Morgain|Dec 17, 2009

Winter fires may be cozy but pollutants in smoke can damage lungs, hurt eyes and smell up your house. When it drops into the teens outside we all like to spend time indoors with family and friends. Often that time is spent enjoying a fire in the home fireplace. Sometimes however that fire can be a health hazard to a more fragile person. From November through February winter weather causes us all to seal up our homes against the chill. That can cause air stagnation in the home. Opening and closing a burning fireplace door to stoke it releases...

  • On Scene

    Undersheriff Jon L Dearmore|Dec 17, 2009

I would like to take a moment and again remember the four fallen Lakewood Police Officers whom were murdered senselessly on November 29, 2009 while protecting and serving their community. On December 8, several sheriff office personnel and several Cathlamet fire/EMS personnel attended the memorial services for Officer Mark Renninger, Officer Tina Griswold, Officer Ronald Owens, and Officer Greg Richards. We all left Cathlamet at 4 a.m. to stage at McChord Air Force Base for the Memorial Procession to the Tacoma Dome later that day. I feel very...

Wahkiakum County commissioners discussed LNG, state budget cuts and other issues in a short meeting Tuesday morning. Three citizens urged the commission to make sure local interests are protected in negotiations with NorthernStar Natural Gas for security for the company's proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) operations. The company has applied for permits to build a receiving and regassification facility at Bradwood, Ore., across the Columbia from Puget Island. • Cold spell strains, snaps water pipes

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 17, 2009

Last week's cold spell created havoc for public and private water systems around Wahkiakum County. Skamokawa's Westside Water Works lost its supply Sunday as a frozen water line thawed. The 60,000 gallon reservoir was drained, and water system members scrambled Monday to make repairs. A leaking sprinkler line on Saturday morning flooded the Cathlamet building which houses the Golden Ladder and the Secret Garden. The floor was flooded when owners Hollie Longtain arrived to open for business Saturday morning. Volunteers helped Longtain and...
