The Wahkiakum Mules got off to a slow start and were never quite able to recover in a tough-to-take 63-52 loss at home Monday night against the visiting Mossyrock Vikings. After committing turnovers in four of their first five possessions, the Mules quickly found themselves trailing and were forced to play catch-up the entire game. Starting point guard Jon Chambers was ineligible, and various players filled in at unfamiliar positions. Leading a balanced scoring attack for the Mules was Wyatt Parker with 10 points followed by Brett Chaput, Ryan...

Hot and cold--that was the play of the Wahkiakum Lady Mules in their 50-39 win over the visiting Winlock Cardinals Tuesday in a Central League basketball game. The lead switched back and forth in the first quarter, with Winlock leading 14-12 after eight minutes. The Mules, who had a deeper bench, went on a 10-point run in the second quarter to lead 29-19 at halftime. It was Winlock's turn in the third quarter; the Cardinals came out hot and outscored the cold-shooting Mules 10-2 in the quarter to close the Mule advantage to 31-29 after three qu...

WET ENOUGH?--Holy cow, did we have some rain last weekend or what? Not to mention before and after the weekend! Then of course, there was the wind, which was howling enough through West Valley to wake me up and it sounded like a freight train was coming through the back of the house--not good! While my field is a lake, my road is above water, at least as I begin to write this, so that's a good thing. It sure beats being trapped at home due to two feet of water over the road, which has happened multiple times before. In Grays River, we saw...

Wise, who is currently majoring in professional writing and political science at Baylor University in Waco, Tex., hosted the first concert in 2007, and another concert was organized for 2008 but canceled due to record snows. This year's proceeds are going to an AIDS hospice in South Africa, Genesis Hope's Sponsor-a-Bed Programme. Wise chose this program because several of...

We are sad to hear former Fair Manager Sandi Nelson has passed on. She was our Fair Manager for many years not so long ago. Sandy and her husband John always took time to walk around the fair and look at every animal and still-life exhibit. Each superintendent was thanked for the many hours they volunteered decorating and displaying exhibits. We all looked forward to the Fair entertainment each year. Sandy would get a big name band to come and play on our little stage. The bleachers would be full of people, all ages, sitting together rocking...
SEATTLE: DIRECTV – which generated more complaints to the Washington Attorney General’s Office in recent years than any other business – will pay more than $1 million to resolve a landmark lawsuit brought by the state on behalf of consumers. Washington became the first state to sue DIRECTV, the nation’s largest satellite television company, over allegations of unfair business practices a year ago this week. About 2,000 Washington residents have complained to the Attorney General’s Office about DIRECTV, which was accused of “unco...
"It's not going to get better soon," was the message state Representatives Brian Blake and Dean Takko shared with local community leaders Tuesday morning. The pair appeared at the quarterly community forum for elected officials, which is sponsored by the Cowlitz/Wahkiakum Council of Governments (COG). They and other legislators gathered Saturday in Olympia at the request of Governor Chris Gregoire to address a $1.7 billion shortfall in the current biennium budget. "We cut about half," Rep. Takko said. "We'll take care of the rest of it in...

Members of the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce and the Lower Columbia Economic Development Council are continuing to iron out details on their merger. The boards of directors of each organization have agreed to merge effective January 1. They hope to save money by ending duplicative services, and they hope their combined funding will allow them to maintain a level of staffing. The economic development council is facing a loss of state economic development funding. The EDC and Chamber share sales tax funds collected for promoting business and...
To The Eagle: In the December 9, 2010 issue of The Eagle, Mr. Gordon had a letter with several questions for the Cathlamet Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services staff. Question 1 concerned being insulted by a referenced document from 1932. Why should anyone be insulted by the age of a document? Our U.S. Constitution was adopted on September 17, 1787 and serves us well today with no one worried about its age. The remaining questions refer to individuals in the Fire Department that he feels wronged him on a civil matter. His letter...

During the intervening years, we have worked hard to build a telephone system that would provide high quality telecommunications services to the communities we serve. We have done this notwithstanding the higher costs of serving rural areas in the State of Washington and when few, if any, other telephone companies were interested in serving our communities. We have served and intend to continue...

Sunday certainly brought an interesting storm to our area. The Grays River was over its banks and in the fields within a few minutes that afternoon. We drove to Rosburg at about 3 p.m. and in the time it took us to get back home the water was about four inches deep over our driveway coming in. Of course, Lake Fred (our pasture during fair weather and duck pond during storms), was already up by then and the creek was more than full. Such an exciting place to live, but you know, I wouldn’t trade it for anywhere else. On Monday, our last two w...
At the year's final meeting of the Wahkiakum Historical Society, treasurer Julie Fritsch reported that the museum was approximately $28 in the red. "It was a good performance considering that we have not requested any support from the county for a couple of years, using only volunteer help and public donations," said society president Judy Brawn. "If we had sold two more memorial bricks, we would have been in the black." The museum is closed until the spring but bricks may be ordered by calling Brawn at 849-4452 or any board member. The...
