Wait and see. That was the message from the Wahkiakum County board of commissioners to public officials making late requests for changes in the 2018 budgets. Prosecuting Attorney Dan Bigelow and District Court Judge Heidi Heywood were asking for pay class increases for two staff members each, saying circumstances earlier this fall kept them from making the requests when other department heads made them, and which commissioners subsequently approved. Town of Cathlamet Librarian Carol Blix was...
Wahkiakum School District Superintendent Bob Garrett announced his resignation at a special Board of Director’s meeting on Tuesday. “I have and continue to love my work and have so appreciated the opportunity to serve you, our staff, student body and community,” Garrett wrote in his letter of resignation. “Thank you for your commitment to this fine district. I am proud to be working with you and I wish you nothing but the best in the future.” Garrett has been with the district for over 23 y...
Chris Bischoff may have started in his new position as director of Wahkiakum Health and Human Services in late October, but he can already speak articulately and at length about the services provided by the organization, and what he hopes to do while he's here. The self described science geek received a Bachelors of Science in Biology from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, where he was born and raised. He fell in love with the Pacific Northwest after a short visit in his youth. After getting...

To The Eagle: We would like to express appreciation to the Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Department for their help recently. Our daughter, visiting over Thanksgiving weekend, locked her keys in her Jeep. A call to the sheriff's department brought two deputies, Mike Balch and Josh Scholten, to our aid on a chilly, rainy day. We thank you gentlemen, along with all members of the department for all the services you provide our community. Char and Rick Damitio Cathlamet...
I am pleased to announce that the Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Office is coordinating a Shop With a Cop Program this year. On Saturday December 16th, 10 kids will be accompanied by deputies and reserves from the Sheriff's Office to shop for gifts for family members and will receive a gift themselves. Deputies will convoy to Longview with their designated child and help them pick out gifts. Once they are all through shopping the kids and...
Puget Island residents Ralph and Helen Keyser were recently named the Womans Club Citizens of the Year for their community service. Ralph Keyser and Helen Loberg were born and raised in Wahkiakum County and they wouldn't have it any other way. I have no desire to go any place else," Helen said. "You know so many people and you feel safe in a small community. I'm not a city girl." As youths, both were raised on farms. "We lived clear out in the Elochoman," Helen said. "We were the first kids on...

COLD ENOUGH?--We've dried out recently but with that dryness came some bone-chilling temperatures here in our neck of the woods. I am not a lover of the 20-something temps but I have loved the blue sky and sunshine that warmed things up to the 40s! I hope you're all faring well during this bitter cold and you've taken the proper steps to insure that you don't freeze up around your house and your animals are tended to accordingly. Considering the fires raging in California and the snowy conditions in many parts of the midwest and south and...

Grace Peacock, who graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 2016, was recently named to the Northwest Athletic Conference Soccer All Star Team. Not bad for a young woman who didn't get to play the sport in high school. Peacock played for the Lower Columbia College Red Devils for the last two years. She was listed as a defender/midfielder on their website, but Coach Harlan Cruser said they used her everywhere on the field. "Grace is a natural athlete," Cruser said. "She hadn't played a lot of...
