    In 2011 the state of Washington was awarded a four year federal grant to implement our state’s Quality Rating and Improvement System called Early Achievers. Much like a hotel or restaurant rating, Early Achievers is meant to inform parents shopping for child care where they can find a quality provider for their child based on an objective set of measurements.     On January 31, 10 a.m., WSU Master Gardener Ted Cunningham will demonstrate the technique used when pruning fruit trees. Pruning trees will control the size of the tree and improve fruit quality. Fruit trees should be pruned every year. Proper pruning techniques reduces disease and promotes greater fruit production.     Vendors and buyers met in the Youth Building at the Skamokawa Fairgrounds on Saturday for what is becoming a regular event in Wahkiakum County, the Flea Market.     Hou Yifei, who has adopted the name of "Andrew" for this visit to the US, seems to be enjoying his time in Cathlamet. The junior exchange student at Wahkiakum High School hails from Guangzhou, a large city in southern China. It's a big change, but he likes the tranquility that he has found here.
