  • Grange continues Christmas traditions

    Diana Zimmerman|Dec 11, 2014

Families, friends and members of the Grays River Grange gathered for their annual Christmas Party on Tuesday. While revelers lined up for the potluck dinner and made their way to tables to eat and enjoy conversation, Tiffani Casper tried to keep up with her grandson, Thomas. "We just joined," she said. "We were looking for "grass roots", something with history and we've found that here." The Grays River Grange is in its 112 year, and how long they've been doing the Christmas Party is anyone's...

  • Mule wrestlers start at 3 Rivers Classic

    Michael Johnson|Dec 11, 2014

The Wahkiakum Mules Wrestling team opened up their season at Mark Morris High School at the Three Rivers Classic last weekend. In addition to several seasoned wrestlers there were a few new faces attending their first tournament ever. This is a big tournament for Wahkiakum because it brings in a lot of larger schools with stiff competition. The Mules have a small squad this year, with five wrestlers on Saturday, three boys and two girls. The new wrestlers, Rayanna Carlon and Eli Velki, both...

  • Mules win at home against Winlock

    Diana Zimmerman|Dec 11, 2014

Brandon Budd scored 37 points Thursday night to lead the Wahkiakum Mules boys basketball team to an easy victory over Winlock, 71-35. "I think we came out with some intensity and played with passion," Coach Todd Souvenir said. "We played good defense in the first half. Overall we did some good things and got more comfortable with our new offense. Brandon obviously played really well and he's going to need to do that this year. Zach Brown, a freshman, played really well, and had some good inside...

  • Commission denies request for manger scene

    Rick Nelson|Dec 11, 2014

There won't be a religious manger scene this year on the Wahkiakum County courthouse lawn. The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce has, for years, decorated the lawn and plantings with holiday lights and figures, including a Santa Claus. On Tuesday, five men asked the board of commissioners for permission to add a religious manger scene to the decorations. "All we're asking is to put up a small scene out there which wouldn't interfere with anything else out there," said Len Lindsey. "We just feel we have a right to put this out there, and we would...

  • Commissioners lobbying for salmon economy

    Rick Nelson|Dec 11, 2014

Wahkiakum County commissioners will lobby this winter for better representation of the commercial industry among high level state officials. Gillnetter Kent Martin of Skamokawa presented Tuesday an economic analysis of the industry's value to the county and suggested how it would fade under current fishery management practices, which, he said, increasingly put recreational fishers' interests over those of commercial fishers. "It's an attempt to castrate the economy of the county and turn it into a service industry," he said, adding that coastal...

  • Food bank gives update and thanks

    Dec 11, 2014

To The Eagle: The Wahkiakum Food Bank served 130 families with turkey baskets. Believe me, there is more to it than just handing out baskets. We had many outsiders come in and help our regular workers and volunteers. Ritchy and his crew cleaned out and made ready the big area to keep the food in. Also helping were the girls in #3 and the girls in the office. I know I no doubt left some out, please forgive me, but know that we thank you, too. To those that received a basket, just know that many were involved with time, food and money. Maybe...

  • Pirates, Trojans stop Mules

    Diana Zimmerman|Dec 11, 2014

The Wahkiakum Mules boys basketball team lost to Adna Thursday night at home, 53-30. The teams were tied at half-time, 24-24, but Adna took advantage of poor shooting by the Mules in the third quarter and pulled ahead 40-29, never looking back. "I thought it went really well," Coach Todd Souvenir said. "I was really proud of them. We ran out of gas in the third quarter, but they worked really hard on defense. I think the score looks a little worse than how it actually was." Senior Brandon Budd l...

  • Lady Mules beat Adna to start season

    Diana Zimmerman|Dec 11, 2014

Peyton Souvenir and Tori Wegdahl had eight points apiece and Sam Boyce and Kaylee Bryant had seven each. Maddie Mace added five points and Morgan Elliott had two. “Offensively we weren’t as efficient as I expect us to be,” Coach Rob Garrett said, “but for a first game it was okay. Our team defense was really good for most of the game.” “Anytime you can sta...

  • Lots of events on tap for this weekend

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 11, 2014

CHANGES--We've gone from freezing temperatures to warmer ones, but with that comes the rain. As we begin this week, it wasn't too bad but they say in the next few days we're going to get quite a bit of it, so by the time you read this, you'll be sure to have the umbrellas out and the boots on. The tides have been very high so I hope that doesn't mean we'll be dealing with some flooding issues in our area, but with heavy rains due, it wouldn't hurt to be vigilant if you're in a low-lying area. SPECIAL DAYS--Those having birthdays from Dec. 11-17...

Children dress in white and carry candles and bright stars to bring the light back to the dark north winter. The oldest daughter in the family wears a wreath of candles and carries a tray of saffron buns to the parents for breakfast in bed as they sing Christmas carols. • Sheriff adding a deputy

    Diana Zimmerman|Dec 11, 2014

Sheriff Mark Howie labored over the budget this year in order to free up funds to create another deputy position. His hard work has paid off. With support from the Wahkiakum Board of Commissioners, he has announced that the sheriff's office will be hiring a sixth deputy in 2015. Howie said the office has had difficulty covering the night and early morning hours since 2009 when two of seven positions were cut due to “budget constraints.” Because of Howie’s work on the budget, there will be no ex...
