After two days of discussions, Wahkiakum County commissioners are a bit closer to setting their 2019 budgets. They spent Monday and Tuesday meetings discussing levy numbers and last minute requests from department heads and supporters of the Cathlamet town library. With Commissioner Blair Brady out of town, collegues Dan Cothren and Mike Backman put off some decisions so that Brady could participate. A resolution for adoption of the budget will come later this month. At the top of the list this week was the request from the Town of Cathlamet...
On November 14 at 7:30 in the morning, Cathlamet resident Mike Paulsen was driving one of the Jerry DeBriae Logging trucks while towing a 60-ton log shuttle. Just as he crossed the Grays River Bridge and rounded a curve, the trailer hitch broke and caused the log shuttle to careen off the trailer and turn upside down at the bottom of the slope below SR 4. Crews gathered November 29 to recover the machine. The 54 year old Paulsen, who was having his birthday during the recovery of the log...

Capital projects were a big topic at Tuesday’s Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners meeting. With a mind to the potential threat of an earthquake along the Cascadia subduction zone, Commissioner Bob Jungers voiced some concerns about the condition of the water main that currently crosses the bridge to serve Puget island with potable water. He suggested that the PUD take advantage of the planned Washington State Department of Transportation repairs to replace it. Jungers suggested that t...
An article in last week's edition misstated the rate increase requested by the county commissioners for new ferry rates. The stated increase from $5 to $6 for passenger cars amounted to 20 percent. All other rates were supposed to also increase by 20 percent, not 5 percent, rounded up to the next whole dollar....
On December 1, 1941, former Puget Island resident Kenneth Garrison made Seaman First Class. He claimed it explained the mood he was in: one of the happiest sailors in the Navy. Six days later, on Sunday, December 7, Garrison was still feeling good. He was in a bunk room on the USS Nevada, hanging out with his buddies and sharing a laugh when a fellow walked in and said he was wanted up at his battle station. "What for?" Garrison asked. "I don't know," his crew mate replied. "Some kind of a...

COLD!--As I begin this column, we're just at 32 here Monday morning. Forecasters say we will be fairly dry this week, which almost always winds up meaning "dry but very cold" in the evening hours. Having some dry time would be nice, as I'm sure everyone is in full shopping mode and it's more fun if we're not getting drenched, but I could sure do without the extra cold. Here's hoping you escape any frozen water lines or pipes and you got your RV's all winterized, etc., and you're all set to keep yourself warm and toasty! ANIMALS NEEDS--Please...
