Wahkiakum County officials are nearing the end of the development of their 2023 budgets. On Tuesday, the board of commissioners met as the supervisors of the county's four flood control zone districts and set assessments and budget amounts for 2023. Next Monday, 9:30 a.m., commissioners will reconvene their recessed Nov. 22 meeting to hold public hearings on potential property tax increases and the final budget. In the preliminary budget, the county's Current Expense Fund, which includes most courthouse departments, totals $7.8 million....

“Never settle” seemed to be the big message of the Wahkiakum School District Board of Directors meeting on November 22. Superintendent Brent Freeman said that security updates were progressing at the district, and while he’d given so much thought to the electrical system and other things in the past, it was the doors that day that had him asking questions about decisions made over the years to settle for less in district facilities. After finding outdated doors and hardware that was even older...
To The Eagle: It seems my recent Letter to The Eagle had too much math for Mr. Bouchard to process. He expressed I stated “the glaringly obvious” about President Biden’s role in our high inflation. Mr. Bouchard had a recent epiphany, hallelujah! His ad nauseam letters don’t illustrate his new heightened enlightenment. His LOE dated 10/16 states “Inflation at the pumps, supermarkets and anywhere else consumers are feeling the burn is the fault of industry, not the fault of the administration currently in power.” “Whine all you want about th...
To The Eagle: After winning Florida’s gubernatorial election, Gov. Ron DeSantis crowed about Republican domination of previously solidly Democratic areas and said: “We not only won the election, we rewrote the political map!” He literally has. Illegally, and with malice aforethought. Florida’s 2010 ‘Fair Districts’ constitutional amendment prohibits partisan-driven redistricting, a landmark accomplishment in the movement against partisan gerrymandering. The Republican legislature has since, drawn congressional maps that largely kept distri...
To The Eagle: Just a short letter to wish Cindi Grasseth a happy retirement from the front desk at the Wahkiakum clinic. Rumor has it that many years ago she sat down close to the end of Una street in Cathlamet and within moments a building was built around her and a medical practice was established. She has survived an untold number of doctors, nurse practitioners and thousands of patients over her decades long career. Thank you so very much from the bottom of our collective hearts. As the youngsters are fond of saying, You Rock! Thanks!...
Games begin this week for winter sports. On Monday, the Wahkiakum Mules boys basketball team was getting ready for their first game against Ilwaco on Wednesday, and the girls basketball team was headed to Longview for a jamboree. Five wrestlers will represent the Mules this year, and they were in the wrestling room preparing for their first match this weekend. Photo by Diana Zimmerman....
by Maude Kimball Butler, (1880-1963) Edited by Karen Bertroch As I read accounts of the pioneer Christmas celebrations it occurs to me that the observances depended on the locality and the backgrounds of the settlers. For that reason, it may be interesting to know how we celebrated the day of days in an isolated spot in Southwestern Washington. The few settlers included ex-employees of the Hudson's Bay Company, New Englanders, Irish, Californians, and Mid-westerners. In 1882, my parents, both...
WHAT WILL WE GET?--As this week begins, the forecast is a mixed bag, with some saying we could get some snow and some saying it’s just going to freeze, while others are saying rain every day, so I guess we will just have to wait and see what shows up. As we all know, the weather can vary around here from Skamokawa to Cathlamet and even from valley to valley and day to day, so it’s just best to be prepared for the worst scenario and then hope for the best, as it’s much easier to deal with the worst if we’re ready for it. I’m not a lover of...

Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including: November 20 — 10:55 p.m. Longview Police had probable cause for an order violation for someone in an Indian Village home. The person yelled profanities at deputies when they arrived. Using verbal de-escalation and the assistance of a neighbor, they were able to gain access to the home, and eventually the woman, who appeared extremely intoxicated, was transported to the hospital by the Cathlamet ambulance f...

There’s a another way to pay a Stanley’s Sanitary Service bill, thanks to a new online billing option which became available in October. “It’s been a few years in the making,” Holly McKay-Beach said. “We were finally able to get it started.” Check the bottom of the bill for the web address and a 12 digit number which will be used to set up an account. The account allows customers to receive bills by email, pay a bill, set up auto pay, and send messages to Stanley’s. It also allows Stanley...

Submitted by Nick Nikkila With only 23 days left until Christmas Eve, the speed of life tends to accelerate this time of year. As a result, one has to pick and choose which Christmas season events to attend. One set of events that is a “must see” and should be high on everyone’s list is the Naselle Finnish-American Folk Festival Christmas Concert, the Tour of Homes and the Soup Supper occurring on December 4. The three events are a wonderful way to kick off the Christmas Season. The concert will take place in the Naselle Community Center locat...
The number of covid-19 cases reported by the Washington Department of Health rose by four in the last week for a cumulative total of 621 in Wahkiakum County. The number of hospitalizations and deaths attributed to the virus stand at 46 and nine respectively. Disclaimer: With the easy accessibility of at home tests, the actual number of active covid-19 cases and actual cumulative numbers in the county, are hard to know. While 70.1 percent of the total population in the state of Washington receive...
