  • Many holiday happenings ahead

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 29, 2012

DECENT--It was nice to see some dry weather last weekend after the downpours we experienced previously. It seems our county had its share of flooding, rock slides and miserable conditions last week to deal with, so a spurt of sunshine and fair weather was a welcome relief. On Monday morning our temperatures in West Valley were down in the 20s and things were frosty white. It looks like winter is coming, so we can't be too fooled by the sunshine of the day. Of course, that's not supposed to last long with things warming up and rains returning....

Teachers are working in two groups, math and English/language arts. Both are looking at...

  • PUD reviews water system expansion costs

    Betsy Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 29, 2012

High water may have prevented Wahkiakum PUD commissioners from meeting in Rosburg on November 20, but it did not prevent them from discussing possible expansion of the Western Wahkiakum Water System. Meeting at the PUD’s Cathlamet headquarters, Manager Dave Tramblie reported to the commissioners on information he’d gathered to assess the potential of expanding the water system. He estimated $50,000 in out-of-pocket costs for materials. For the section of the expansion between Salmon Creek Road and Salme Road, a distance of almost a mile, the...

  • Port District 2 okays budget, new office

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 29, 2012

Commissioners of Port District No. 2 last week approved a $227,300 budget for 2013. The budget includes funding for a new office for the port district. The port has used a building owned by the now-defunct Skamokawa Park and Recreation District as its office on the edge of the port's Skamokawa Vista Park. Port officials say the office is run down and inadequate for office needs. Commissioners agreed to proceed with purchase and installation of a park model building as the new office. The building would be located inside the park, and if the...

  • Commissioners wrap up work on preliminary budget

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 29, 2012

Wahkiakum County officials crunched numbers one more time Tuesday as they put finishing touches on their proposed budgets for 2013. The board went over requests for increased spending from department heads and wrestled with projecting how much, if any, deficit the Current Expense Budget will have next year. In the end, the board of commissioners decided to plan to divert $200,000 from the County Road Levy to cover a possible shortfall in the Current Expense Fund, which finances most county departments. It would be the third year for a diversion...

The center is activated in times of natural disasters or public health emergencies. Currently, the center is in the basement of the River Street Building. However, its quarters are temporarily filled with the Cathlamet municipal library while the old town hall building is remodeled. Renfro has designated the Cathlamet...

  • Sen. Hatfield pleased with leadership votes

    Nov 29, 2012

To The Eagle: I congratulate Sen. Ed Murray on his election as Senate majority leader and the actions he has taken to represent the many different points of view within the Democratic Caucus. Already, Sen. Murray has shown tremendous skill in leadership and being open to others’ thoughts and suggestions. We face a narrowly divided Senate chamber and, more than ever, we will need to see bipartisanship and cooperation between Senate Republicans and Democrats, and members from rural, urban and suburban districts. The recommendation of my friend a...

  • Food bank grateful for donations

    Nov 29, 2012

Congratulations and thanks to all those who donated money, food and their time to fill and give out more than 130 Thanksgiving Baskets from the Wahkiakum Food Bank. It takes more than just food to fill Thanksgiving Baskets.  The food had to be gathered together from many places, with many people helping to put it all in one spot, then divide it, put it into baskets, and put it into the vehicles. Esther and Ruth (hmmm, good Biblical names) had to stay an extra two hours.  Needless to say we were all tired, but it was a good tired. We...

  • What's happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Nov 29, 2012

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner! I was very thankful that the high tides, big gusts of wind and inches of rain predicted did not cause severe flooding at the Fairgrounds. Earlier in the week I had asked some local volunteers, Bill Chamberlain, Ed Stevens and Jerry Ledtke, to help me watch for any approaching flood water problems as this storm moved through our County. By Monday afternoon the winds were increasing and the rain was pouring down and blowing sideways because of the high winds. We decided it was time to move...

  • Movie night, bazaar, Tour of Homes ahead

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 29, 2012

I hope everyone had as wonderful a Thanksgiving as we did. This year was the first time I cooked the Thanksgiving meal for several years. We enjoyed the company of my uncle, David Hammonds, my sister, Diane Gray and our son, Shane Cruz, his wife Delena and their two beautiful sons, Emmett and Wyatt. It was a quiet day, but we have so much to be thankful for and enjoyed the day thoroughly, even though we all ate too much. News from Naselle: Sports scheduled for the Naselle teams for the coming week include: junior varsity boys basketball at...
