A group of friends, old and new, gathered at Vista Park in Skamokawa to clean up the beach for a couple hours on Sunday afternoon. Children joined in the clean up, but stopped to play when the mood hit them. A dog ran happily from one group to another. Annie Sutherland, who organized the event, thought it would be a good opportunity to spend some time outdoors, to take care of our community and the nature that surrounds us. Volunteers picked up lots of glass and styrofoam. A tire was packed...
Vendors and customers were chatting happily and doing business at the St. James Annual Holiday Gift Fair on Saturday during the noon hour. Some visitors were enjoying lunch with friends, while keeping the kitchen busy. A big rush came in when St. James opened their doors at 10 a.m., according to Rachael Wolford, who was selling homemade baked goods with friends. They had krumkake, berlinerkranser, caramel rolls and more. Like a responsible gambler, I went into the gym with a set amount of...
Wahkiakum County commissioners will hold their annual public hearing on their 2016 budgets on December 7, 9:30 a.m., in the commission's meeting room. Commissioners went into the budget preparation process thinking they were looking at a revenue shortfall for the Current Expense Fund, which covers most courthouse services, but the preliminary budget shows a balanced fund budget estimated at $5.1 million. Current Expense shows some revenue increase. In the Non-Departmental budget, Criminal...
County officials gathered November 12 to initiate a process that they hope will put sand back on Puget Island beaches. They are setting up a Flood Control Zone District, which will allow them to raise a levy on residents whose properties have been affected by disintegrating beaches. The funds will pay for a study and with any luck, pay the US Army Corps of Engineers to place sand where it is so very needed. “I don’t see any other way to come up with the kind of money we’re going to be charg...
I don't feel I can let slide some of the comments coming this past week from Republican politicians commenting on Syrian refugees wanting to come to the United States. The comments are completely foreign to the principles that form the moral backbone of our nation. A mayor of Roanoke, Virginia, suggested Syrian refugees be sent to internment camps, such as those created for Japanese Americans in World War II. That action has been acknowledged as a shameful, racist action. The mayor apologized for the remarks on Friday. Actor George Takei, who...
To The Eagle: The July 16, 2015 Eagle has a front-page story: “County loses $1 million in last minute legislation.” On page 2 Rick Nelson reports that DNR’s practice is to extort (my word) a 25% commission off trust timber sales, to be raised to a kleptomaniac (my word) 30%. Thirty percent! County Commissioner Dan Cothren made the math real--$1 million trust sale proceeds equals $300,000 DNR rakeoff (my word). Please go back and read that story. If there’s that kind of gravy in timber, why in April 2014 was I forced to sell Rayonier stock b...

God Bless Jimmie Lou Cleveland and all the Wahkiakum Food Bank members and our very good helpers...
To The Eagle: I offer this three step process to reorganize. First, get everyone that doesn’t work or volunteer at Fire and EMS services completely out of the decision making process. Secondly, have only the good folks that do the work, volunteers, etc., in the fire department and EMS services get together and decide how they want to reorganize to accomplish their mission. Thirdly, have them tell us how they believe it best to reorganize and what they need to get it done. Then give them everything they ask for without debate. Thank them over an...
Frankie Mendez, Class of 2004, is back at Wahkiakum as head coach of the Wrestling team for both the high school and the middle school, and there is a bit of a buzz about it. Parents who have long supported the program are excited about the four time state competitor, who twice took fifth place. Wrestling is a family affair for Mendez. He followed his older brothers into the sport, first by attending their practices as a youth, eventually becoming the team manager. "They got me started," he said...
COLD ENOUGH?--We were happy to have the big wind and rain event here subside, and bright, clear, starry skies return with some sunny days to boot. However, the plunging temperatures were not to my liking and much colder than predicted, so while some hovered in temperatures at the freezing mark, out here in West Valley, we plummeted down into the teens-brr! Needless to say, this caused some extra angst just before the holiday weekend and made for some sleepless nights as we worked to keep water pipes from freezing and our homes nice and toasty!...
