In his second year coaching the Wahkiakum Lady Mules basketball team, Coach Rob Garrett has plenty to be excited about. He has a new assistant coach, Tina Merz, who played for the University of Montana in Missoula, and is an experienced coach who knows how to post up. And last year’s young talented team has matured into an even better bunch of ballplayers. “We have a lot of talent," he said. "We have an all around team. Our starting five is stacked. Already you can tell we’re way ahead of where...

State fishery managers have approved an evening razor-clam dig on ocean beaches starting Saturday and running for eight days on the lowest tides so far this season. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) approved the dig after marine toxin tests showed the clams on those beaches are safe to eat. "We’ve had some great digs so far this season, but this one could be truly exceptional," said Dan Ayres, WDFW coastal shellfish manager. "If the weather cooperates, most diggers should be able to get their limit in record time." Ayres s...
NIPPY OUT THERE--This past week has been mighty cold with temperatures dropping in the low 20's in West Valley, so while the clear blue skies are welcome and the sun is shining brightly, it's not exactly warm and toasty when you step outside, brrr! The frost has been so thick at times that you could swear it snowed and even after a week of freezing temperatures and dry days, we've still got plenty of moisture in the air to cause us to have thick, heavy frost every morning. Needless to say, it's been a trying time for some of us as we...

Commissioners of Port District No. 2 discussed Grays River buoys and County Line Park and acted on budget and finances when they met November 19. Working with Westend citizens and Wahkiakum County, the port several years ago installed a series of buoys across Grays Bay for boaters coming out of Deep River. The port has found it difficult to maintain the buoys, however, and at least two have broken free of their mooring anchor and drifted away. None of the buoys were ever equipped with lights. Office Manager Janet Bryan told Commissioners...
Port District 1 Board of Commissioners met Monday afternoon for a make up session to discuss the district’s budget and rate changes at the Marina for 2014. They also voted to change the fee discussed in the original interlocal agreement with Port 2 regarding County Line Park from $500 to $1 per year. In the past, port commissioners received moorage at the marina as compensation for their service. After allowing that this form of remuneration might not fit all the needs of commissioners p...

The Emergency Backpacks that were given out to those who visited all of the forty-five (45) vendors...
To The Eagle: Since January 2010 I have had a wonderful experience and enjoyed the fantastic relationships with you all while working here in Cathlamet. Thank you - for accepting me into your families and allowing me to assist in your health care. As most of you know my mother passed away on October 4th of this year. Some of you may also know that I was a caregiver for her until the end. Needless to say I have taken her loss harder than expected. At the end of October I had a "difficult time coping with change" and put in my resignation. A...

Back in March, Commissioner Mike Backman formed a task force to look at food insecurity in the county. We have been working to assess the needs and strengths of our current system. And so far, we are working towards an action plan that will bring our residents together to address the needs. In this initial column, I would like to provide some statistics as a foundation for our projects. There are approximately 4...
