    Wahkiakum County officials released their proposed 2010 preliminary budget Monday and will prepare for a public hearing on December 7. Commissioners Dan Cothren, Blair Brady and Lisa Marsyla have told department heads they expect a revenue shortfall of at least $200,000 in 2010, and they told department heads to keep their budgets at 2009 levels.     It was a turkey bonanza at this year’s Turkey Bingo fund raiser, with lots of Wahkiakum families winning their Thanksgiving dinner. The Backmans outdid themselves, organizing the whole evening and donating the fantastic blu ray and Wii player raffle prizes. Martha and our fair volunteers did an outstanding job, raising over $1,600 for next year’s fair.     Powerful wind swept through Wahkiakum, knocking out power to the entire county and sending trees crashing across roads and power lines Sunday morning. The winds roared in during the early morning hours on Sunday. The National Weather Service clocked wind gust of over 60 mph in Astoria. The steady blow knocked down trees everywhere.     “The Great American Smokeout” has success stories in Wahkiakum County. The annual smokeout challenge asked smokers to quit for 24 hours last Thursday.     Commissioners of Port District No. 2 of Wahkiakum County were in good spirits November 17 when Chair Brian O’Connor called the meeting to order to go over port business. O’Connor asked Auditor Sharon Mast how things were. Mast had been on a family emergency during last month's meeting and said things were fine.
