    John Hepburn Danielsen, 66, of Scottsdale, Ariz. died October 19, 2011. He was born February 1, 1945 to Elmer and Jessie Danielsen and grew up on Puget Island, attending school in Cathlamet before moving to Seattle. He was a naval architect and engineer and traveled extensively. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Lou Ann and Kenny Pedersen of Hemet, Calif. and other family members.     Cathlamet resident, Carl J. Backman, 65, passed away November 18, 2011 at St. John Medical Center. He was born July 28, 1946, in Longview, to Sigurd and Gunborg (Anderson) Backman. Carl grew up in Longview and graduated from R.A. Long High School in 1964. He married Lorna Sturm in 1966; she survives him at home. In 1978 Carl and Lorna moved to Puyallup and nine years ago they moved to Cathlamet. He worked for Weyerhaeuser in research and development as a biologist for 38 years; retiring in 2002.     Anna Carina Jill Old, 43, passed away at her home near Bonners Ferry, Idaho on November 4, 2011. Anna was born on September 28, 1968 in Sweden to Ove K. and Ingalill Gunnarson. She grew up in Oregon and Montana. She met her husband Mel Old in Alaska where they lived until Mel's death from cancer. After Mel's death, she moved to Grays River before moving to Bonners Ferry in the spring of 2011.     Port District No. 1 commissioners raised management employee salaries 2.5 per cent at their meeting November 10. The manager’s annual salary will be $47,279 and the assistant manager’s $29,456. Both positions are full time and receive health benefits. Port manager Jackie Lea recommended lowering the winter lodging rates to draw customers staying more than one night.
