Wahkiakum High School students celebrated Veteran's Day by welcoming local veterans to an assembly on Wednesday, November 12. Steve Vermillion, a highly decorated combat Medevac pilot was invited by alum Bob Neilson, Class of '57, to speak at this year's assembly. The event began with a quiet medley of emotional reunions between soldiers and their families caught on film, a presentation created by Mr. Cox's history class. When the film ended and eyes were dried, the senior class lit candles as A...
Wahkiakum County's lawsuit with the state Department of Ecology over the application of biosolids is attracting attention across the state and nation. National groups are weighing in on the biosolids issues, and counties and municipalities across the state are watching the case to see how it applies to the regulation of marijuana cultivation, processing and sales. In 2011, Wahkiakum County adopted an ordinance banning the application of Class B biosolids, septage or sewage sludge to any land within the county. The ordinance allows application o...
The Cathlamet Town Council gave initial approval to the town's 2015 budget when it met Monday. After going into executive session, the council also authorized Mayor Dale Jacobson to seek legal counsel regarding potential litigation against Skillings Connolly, the firm that has been designing the street light improvement project, and the council approved a $23,197.70 payment to the lighting contractor for recent work. The budget has little change from current levels, officials said Monday. The committee that drafted the budget focused on...
To The Eagle: Mr. Carlsen’s letter to the editor from Nov. 13th is inaccurate. The erosion on Pancake Point and East Sunny Sands has been an issue for decades. Dredge spoils have been placed on Pancake Point on down several times within the past 40 years. The beach erosion is not just about the Watson house. The erosion affects all properties along East Sunny Sands Rd. Reference the Notice of Application for Shoreline Management Substantial Development, Conditional Use permit for Variance Permit May 2007. This permit was for “ Propose pla...
To The Eagle: Mr. Carlsen’s letter is clearly inaccurate and full of unsubstantiated claims. This is not about saving the Watson home. It is about saving the property of homeowners up and down East Sunny Sands. It is also about saving property on other parts of Puget Island that are or soon will be suffering the same fate. If Mr. Carlsen took the time to research the issue, attend the county commissioner meetings, talk to his neighbors, and maybe take a walk along the beach, he would be aware that the erosion has extended well beyond where i...

To The Eagle: As winter's cold blast starts across the nation, this is a great time for everyone to make sure that their outside hoses are disconnected and that outdoor faucets are winterized. Any exposed water pipes should be protected from freezing. During the cold weather a great thing to do is to visit Cathlamet's library to get warm and check out a book or two. The library remodel is complete and readers will find the building much improved. Library users may enjoy the following email exchange between myself and librarian Carol Blix, the b...

Wahkiakum County commissioners discussed their comprehensive plan and other issues in a 25-minute meeting Tuesday. Lily Kolditz, a member of the commission's Real Property Rights Advisory Committee, said that board has been examining the work done a few years ago to begin updating the county comprehensive land use plan. They discussed that update with the county planning commission at a recent meeting, and they feel the draft needs to be changed to keep the plan from tying the county to onerous land use controls. Kolditz suggested the board see...
Wahkiakum County Commissioners met on Wednesday, November 12 for regular business. Commissioner Blair Brady touched on the recent court decision on biosolids. “On election day, we received notification that the appeals court ruled in ecology’s favor on biosolids,” Brady said. “There is interest from a few other counties, particularly Pacific County and Lewis County in taking this to the Supreme Court. The issue has developed away from just a biosolids issue to a county’s rights and authority iss...
COLD ENOUGH?--We had temperatures down in the teens in West Valley, but at least we had the clear blue, sunny skies during the day. Of course, a couple of those days were windy and if you were out in that, the sun was just a teaser, as it looked like it should be warm but it definitely wasn't. By the time you read this, we should have warmed up and be back to gloomy and wet, but at least we won't have to deal with the worry of frozen water pipes and icy roads any longer. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Nov. 20-26 are Larry...
