  • Winlock, Adna claim wins over Lady Mules

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 27, 2011

The Wahkiakum Lady Mule basketball team lost games on the road to two Central League opponents this past week. On January 19 at Winlock, the Cardinals squeaked by the Mules 43-41. The Mules led 22-20 at halftime. "We had some opportunities to win the game but didn't pull through," said Mule Coach Tiffany Niemeyer. "If we would have hit some more free throws down the stretch, then we would have won. We didn't shoot very well, and forced a lot of bad passes. There's lots of room for improvement." The Mules made 13 of 31 free throws, 42 percent....

  • Plenty of events in the coming months

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 27, 2011

NICE BREAK--After the torrential rains we had, it is nice to have a bit of a dry streak. It seems we can't get the dry without the cold, but that's okay, as those heavy rains wind up causing so much grief, that I'd much rather deal with the nip in the air than the flood waters. At least I'm not buried in snow right now. It's bad enough for those still dealing with flooding problems; we certainly don't need to add snow to the mix. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from January 27-February 2 are Becky Thacker, Brandon McClain, Gary York,...

  • Students relate MLK's dream to their school

    Ruby Murray|Jan 27, 2011

Associated Student Body leader Shelby Felton asked fellow students, “Do you know why we celebrate Martin Luther King Day?” The third-period world history class was quiet but then, with prompting, a few details of King’s life emerged. The sophomores, born years after King was assassinated, worked to find relevance of his life and teaching to their school community. Felton was one of six ASB leaders who researched King’s life and led discussions in World History classes at the high school Thursday. Students identified some of the words or teas...

  • Drug testing moving toward implementation

    Ruby Murray|Jan 27, 2011

The Wahkiakum School Board again took public testimony on its proposed drug testing policy at its regular meeting January 19 and will review procedures to implement the policy at its meeting in February. The board heard results of a December survey in which the majority of students denied ever trying marijuana, and learned a community member had contacted the American Civil Liberties Union. The district is considering offering drug testing to students suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol at school, with the hope that...

  • Counties press state to fund land transfers

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 27, 2011

Officials from Wahkiakum and other small counties with timber land bases are lobbying in the legislature for a bill that would allow them to replace encumbered land with productive forests. Wahkiakum County Commissioner Dan Cothren reported Tuesday that he and officials from Skamania, Pacific and Klickitat counties testified before state Senate and House committees about the proposal. The encumbered lands have harvest restrictions placed on them to provide habitat for endangered species. In the case of Wahkiakum County, some 3,000 of the...

The recovery board funnels state money for salmon and steelhead recovery into projects in Wahkiakum, Cowlitz, Clark and Skamania counties. It funds stream restoration projects and projects such as replacing failing culverts that are barriers to fish passage. It also works in regional species...

  • Commissioners split over computer expense

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 27, 2011

Wahkiakum County commissioners voted 2-1 Tuesday to purchase a device to monitor Internet bandwidth use by county employees' computers. Deputy Auditor Karen Fleming, chair of the courthouse Information Technology Committee, said the device, a Cymphonix Network Composer, would allow system supervisors to manage Internet usage by prioritizing traffic and blocking unwanted sites. They'll also be able to increase security and report specific user activity. The committee used the device on a trial basis for a month; it confirmed concerns that...

  • Commissioners consider fair manager resolution

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 27, 2011

Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday discussed a resolution to allow the president of the Wahkiakum County Fair Board to serve also as fair manager. In the past, the county's resolution establishing the fair board prohibited the manager from being a fair board member, but fair officials had recently asked for the change. Commissioner Blair Brady, the commission's representative on the fair board, said the current president, Becky Ledtke, served as manager for a while last year and has essentially been handling both manager and president du...

  • Chiropractor growing a part-time practice

    Ruby Murray|Jan 27, 2011

Dr. Rick Still has expanded his Longview chiropractic practice to Cathlamet one day a week. “If Thursday fills up, I’d probably add Tuesday morning,” said Still, who shares space with Stephanie Crouse’s Simply Massage at 94 Main Street. Patients call Still’s Longview office to make appointments and can be referred there if they need x-rays before he can treat them. Still said he was en route to becoming an MD when he had an accident while wrestling. A chiropractor fixed his knee, and Still changed course. The Calgary, Alberta, native moved to...

  • Seal Slough situation keeps getting worse

    Jan 27, 2011

To The Eagle: With the low tides the last few days, I have taken time to do my routine survey of my section of dike. Today I also went and paddled upstream in the canoe at low tide. I encountered continual degradation of the dikes, in particular on the outside curves of the slough. Our section of the outside curve is particularly easy to see, as we have the dock to make close visual inspection at low tide. From the dock it is very easy to see the continuing and worsening scour and sloughing. Very noticeable, from just a month ago. The dike is...

  • LNG threat lives on

    Jan 27, 2011

To The Eagle: Thank you new County Commissioners and Dirk Rhone for putting the kibosh on the old commission's approval of the Oregon Pipeline. You quickly acted in the county's best interest. Re-evaluating the environmental and safety impacts of the proposed 41 mile natural gas pipeline that would cross Clatsop County is absolutely necessary. Whether the pipeline would be for exporting gas to China and other Asian countries or used for importing LNG, the consumer and the environment would be the loser of this venture. Since NorthernStar's...

  • Lake Fred has receded; ducks gone

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 27, 2011

We can once again drive out our driveway without worrying about water getting into the vehicle. Oh, the joys of winter in Grays River.
