  • County turns out to vote

    Diana Zimmerman|Nov 16, 2023

The Wahkiakum County Auditor’s office has received 1,646 ballots so far from 3,490 voters registered in the county, and are waiting for any remaining ballots posted on or before Nov. 7 to trickle in. That’s an “impressive 47 percent turnout,” Election Coordinator Amanda Boehler said, “much higher than many of the larger counties in the state.” “[It] really goes to show that our community cares a lot about who they choose to put into local offices to make the choices that affect our day-to-da...

  • Water woes

    Diana Zimmerman|Nov 16, 2023

Some residents in east Cathlamet woke up to water issues Sunday morning. According to the Wahkiakum County Sheriff’s report, at 4:25 a.m., a resident on Irving Street was the first to call, reporting low water pressure and a massive leak from a neighbor’s house that was flooding their own carport. Later, a person on E Street would report they were without water. “Over the next couple hours several calls came in from nearby residents that either experienced problems or were concerned about poten...

  • Wahkiakum dairy struggles with flooding

    Diana Zimmerman|Nov 16, 2023

Flooding has always been part of the landscape for Gary Burkhalter, who grew up dairy farming with his parents in Grays River. It’s work he continues to do with his wife Susan, along with their children, and includes their grown son, Austin. “Flooding has been here and always will be here,” Burkhalter said. While this natural occurrence really only causes problems once or twice a year, it can be disruptive to all who live and in the Burkhalters’ case, work, in the area. Burkhalter Dairy is locat...

  • What MAGA means to me

    Nov 16, 2023
    1

To The Eagle: There is nothing less factual then a liberal -minded person describing what MAGA is really about. The Letter last week from Mr. Lehr was a horrible depiction of what MAGA represents and he should not paint with such a wide brush when writing about a very large group of people. I am, I guess, what liberals refer to as MAGA and may I say damn proud of it. I as a MAGA supporter I believe we in this great county need and have clean air and clean water. Anyone that doesn't believe that needs to study environmental law before...

  • A dystopian future has become our present

    Nov 16, 2023

To The Eagle: Margaret Atwood’s novel “The Handmaid’s Tale” of a ‘forced birth’ society in a dystopian future has become our present. Twenty four states have banned abortion. Those states are also criminalizing the purchase or distribution of home abortion pills. Traveling across their state’s boundaries to obtain abortions elsewhere is being criminalized along with medical providers, friends and organizations who help such “abortion refugees.” Idaho has adopted an “abortion trafficking” ban, making it a crime for adults to obtain abortion pi...

  • I just don't get it

    Nov 16, 2023
    3

To The Eagle: I always try to be an informed, balanced voter. I vote for who I feel is the best person for the position, just as I used to when hiring people in my previous life. It’s because of this that I’m having such a hard time understanding Trump’s support among his followers. I am trying to though. Last week, an Eagle article did a good job delineating the multiple faults that my GOP and Trump have. He missed one critical fault that I’m shocked doesn’t get more attention though: Trump’s disregard for the security of classified...

  • The big lie works

    Nov 16, 2023

To The Eagle: With extreme differences between the two main presidential candidates, Trump and Biden, the poll numbers show how divided opinions are. I can’t help but wonder, do Americans actually look up facts and policies, or simply go by rhetoric from fellow Americans, and mindless memes on the internet? The ‘Big Lie,’ of which I have written many times, has been repeated excessively by Trump. It is a time-tested maneuver that still works; you only have to ask a few people if they believe in our elections and democracy. Now the lies exten...

  • U.S. House passes stopgap spending bill in bipartisan vote

    Jennifer Shutt, Washington State Standard|Nov 16, 2023

The U.S. House took a broadly bipartisan vote Tuesday to fund the government into the new year, though the measure must pass the Senate by the end of the week if Congress is going to avoid a partial government shutdown. The 336-95 House vote was the first major legislative test for Speaker Mike Johnson, the Louisiana Republican who took on the role after the former speaker was ousted after passing a similar bipartisan short-term funding bill in late September. A total of 93 House Republicans...

  • A fatal year for Washington motorists

    Nov 16, 2023

The Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Council of Governments (CWCOG) recently finalized a three-year contract with the Washington Transportation Safety Commission to operate the Target Zero program for Cowlitz, Wahkiakum, and Lewis Counties. The federal government requires each state to have a Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP); Target Zero is Washington’s plan. The Washington State Target Zero vision is “zero deaths and serious injuries by 2030 from traffic involved accidents.” Target Zero was created to “guide the community toward the vision of zero de...

  • Walk-n-Knock Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Nov 16, 2023

COLD AND WET. Well, if you're like me, the dampness we have had has made your bones ache. It's not just the cooler temperatures, but the feeling that we've been "chilled to the bone" with all that moisture that comes from the fog and the rain and the downpours. It looks like we may have some dry days this week but that also means temperatures will fall into the thirties, so there's always a trade -off when the clear days show up. However, by the weekend, it looks like a fifty-fifty shot at rain for multiple days. I'm sure my old bones will be...

  • Sheriff's Report, November 16, 2023

    Nov 16, 2023

November 5 5:51 p.m. A driver was stopped for following too close and crossing a double yellow line. November 6 7:41 a.m. A bus driver said a man was wandering around in the rain on East Valley Road. By 7:52 a.m., numerous callers had reported the man. One said it looked like he was sleeping while standing. Another said he was moving back and forth between a kid’s bus stop and the roadway. At 7:55 a.m., the man was picked up by someone in a black truck. A deputy responded but was unable to locate the individual. 11:08 a.m. A welfare check w...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Karen Bertroch|Nov 16, 2023

While we live in what some might call a "backwater" area of southwest Washington, we are privileged to harbor artists and writers. One unique artist is Darbury Novoselic from Deep River. She is well known to folks at the Grays River Grange where often Darbury brings her bread to meals held there. Now she is showing us her love of art. Through that medium, we can see her artistry in the fiber art she creates in "the barn" on the farm where she and her husband, Krist, live. Krist clearly supports...

  • WA transportation services back online following cyberattack

    Washington State Standard|Nov 16, 2023

Following three days of outages, many of the Washington State Department of Transportation public web services are restored, the agency reported Friday. A cyberattack hit the department starting Tuesday, cutting online access to statewide traffic cameras, ferry trackers and oversized freight permitting. As of Friday morning, ferry schedules, some ferry tracking on the mobile app, mountain pass conditions, the agency’s real-time travel map, traffic cameras, and online commercial vehicle permits had been restored, according to the department. M...

  • Man dies hunting in Skamokawa

    Diana Zimmerman|Nov 16, 2023

A Longview man died last Friday while hunting with his son in the woods above Skamokawa. The Wahkiakum County Sheriff’s Department received a call at 4:48 p.m. from the son who became concerned when his father did not return to their vehicle. His father was last seen around 7 a.m.; he was 81 and had a heart condition. A search began at 8 p.m. on state land at the end of Middle Valley Road and the man was found less than two hours later, about a quarter mile from the truck, according to U...

  • "A gift to the community"

    Nov 16, 2023

Submitted by Susan Gentry "We're here to honor and thank all those who served and their families," said Pastor Jeff Driscoll as he welcomed the more than 70 members of the community. Each year, Our Saviour's Lutheran Church hosts a free dinner to local residents who are connected to veterans. State Representative Joel McIntire again attended, in full Marine dress, to lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Mayor David Olson greeted the audience with his thanks for all they do to make our community specia...

  • Retired officer honored by Marine Corps League

    Diana Zimmerman|Nov 16, 2023
    1

Rosburg resident Darrel Trotter was honored by the Marine Corps League Daniel E Crockett Detachment 1228 at their annual ball in Astoria this weekend when he was named Gene Bolstad Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. The award is named for a Washington State Patrol Trooper who died on duty in 1957 while trying to rescue a teenager caught in a strong rip current at Long Beach. Each year it is awarded to an outstanding law enforcement officer in Pacific or Wahkiakum County. "The local veterans...

  • Marina market gets a new name

    Diana Zimmerman|Nov 16, 2023

It seems Cathlamet is becoming a destination for sailing clubs. “We got some good news on another regatta through the Willamette Sailing Club,” Wahkiakum County Port 1 Manager Todd Souvenir told the Port 1 Board of Commissioners last Thursday. If it works out, there could be three regattas this summer, with one in July, one in August, and another one, potentially in early May. Organizers are expected to visit in January to consider logistics. Mackenzie Jones, the administrative assistant for...

  • Travel safely on Thanksgiving

    Nov 16, 2023

Travelers headed over the river and through the woods to Grandma’s house this upcoming Thanksgiving holiday should plan now for winter weather, and expect delays on major routes. Cross-mountain travel Weather conditions over mountain passes can change rapidly. It is important for travelers to plan ahead and follow posted chain requirements. It’s often drivers who travel too fast, without traction tires or chains, or under the influence, that close a mountain pass for everyone. Practice installing chains before heading out the door. No con...

  • Oh, deer

    Nov 16, 2023

By Brandon J. Simmons On Saturday, Wahkiakum Outdoors will present for the public its latest offering, a talk by retired wildlife biologist Paul Myers, who will speak on issues effecting the local Columbia White-tailed deer population. For the past five years, Wahkiakum Outdoors has offered local residents opportunities to learn more about the local environment. Wahkiakum resident Michael Passmore, himself an expert in wildlife ecology, started the group while he was a member of the Wahkiakum Community Center in Cathlamet. He saw it as an...
