Marine Sergeant Joel McEntire is a middle school teacher. "I'm not a veteran, by definition, McEntire told students. "I said I would serve for eight years. I have served for six. When I have faithfully served my time, and am no longer active on the reserve status, then I will be considered a veteran." He compared service to...

  • Natural resources board picks plan for marbled murrelet management

    Rick Nelson|Nov 16, 2017

Washington's Board of Natural Resources (BNR) on Nov. 7 selected its preferred alternative for management of marbled murrelet habitat on state-managed trust timberlands. Started in 1997, the habitat conservation plan (HCP) is meant to preserve habitat for the endangered species, which lays eggs on large mossy branches in old trees. According to a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) news release, the alternative "is intended to provide long-term certainty for murrelet conservation practices, and for public services and local jobs that rely on...

  • Election: Jacobson takes lead in race for mayor

    Rick Nelson|Nov 16, 2017

The election for mayor of Cathlamet took a turn in the second round of tallying votes last Thursday. Incumbent Mayor Dale Jacobson claimed a narrow lead in the election, 69-65, over write-in candidate Laurel Waller. When votes were first counted Nov. 7, Waller led 58-53. Waller had filed as a candidate for Council Position 5, and she leads write-in candidate Jean Burnham, who was appointed to the council earlier this year, 96-42. Waller has said she would take the office of mayor and forfeit the council position if she were to defeat Jacobson....

  • Yes . . . Let's join together!

    Nov 16, 2017

To The Eagle: A year and a couple of weeks ago, Donald Trump became president of the USA, even though he lost the popular vote. Since then, over 60 percent of the country now feels he’s doing an overall poor job performing his presidential duties. This is increasingly borne out through many national polls, including recently Fox News. Without stating the obvious, we all know the president has been purposely divisive on many fronts. He was as a candidate, for one by encouraging people to punch those that disagreed with him in the face, and o...

  • Don't worry, we're in good hands

    Nov 16, 2017

To The Eagle: It comes as no surprise that even the little man has a chance in the Trump administration! To wit: A former manager at a Meineke auto repair venue was appointed to the Energy Department. A cabana attendant at the Westchester (NY) country club was appointed to the Agriculture Department. Energy Secretary Rick Perry stated that if we used more fossil fuels to keep the lights on there would be fewer sexual assaults. A new member of the EPA Scientific Advisory Board stated that the air in the USA is too clean for optimal health. A...

  • Writer doesn't see them as successes

    Nov 16, 2017

To The Eagle: A recent contributor suggested honoring the year ago election of our current president by coming together in celebration. Presumably to do with the many successes. I'm game so allow me to name a few of the successes. Boy, where to start.... So far has managed to load his cabinet with ones willing to lie under oath. Nice touch to include his family members as advisors. Has instructed his base to ignore any news that doesn't flatter him and his administration’s many highly questionable actions. Has allowed and encouraged by his acti...

  • County may go to court to gain rights-of-entry

    Rick Nelson|Nov 16, 2017

Are the gloves ready to come off? Wahkiakum County officials are trying to get everything in order for beach nourishment projects next year, and facing one major obstacle. County officials and their engineering consultants met Tuesday afternoon to go over the final section of the permitting process, the Section 408 review, and they feel good about that, said Commissioner Dan Cothren. "Once we get this out of the way, I'd say that by January, we'll get some dates (for dredging)," Cothren said. "They'll know what's out there." He was referring...

The annual launch fee will go up from $55 to $60 next year, though Commissioner Brett Deaton suggested that they consider making it even more, while possibly offering a lower rate for seniors. “Launch fees at Ilwaco and Chinook are $100 a year,” he said. “I only want to raise it because that ramp cost so much last year to re...
