The gardening season is now over. Our local Community Garden is into clean-up mode, and we are putting the garden to bed for the winter. The garden gang thanks all the gardeners, volunteers, and contributors for their help and support. This year the garden donated 1,540 pounds of fresh, seasonal vegetables and herbs to our local food banks. Last revised in 2011, the plan guides the management and development of Castle Rock parks, recreation facilities, and programs, including school athletic fields, the senior center and the library. State shellfish managers closed the recreational crab fisheries inside Willapa Bay effective November 6 due to elevated marine toxin levels. The rest of Washington’s coastal areas, including Grays Harbor, remain open for sport crab fishing, said Dan Ayres, coastal shellfish manager for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). “Test results indicate crabs elsewhere on the coast are safe to eat,” Ayres said. “We’ll continue monitoring for marine toxins in Willapa Bay and elsewhere along the coast.” The department announced t...
Three area teams start state tournament competition this week. On Friday, the Naselle Comet and Wahkiakum Mule volleyball teams will compete in state tournament action at the Yakima Valley SunDome. Competing in the Class 1B tournament, Naselle opens at 11:30 a.m. against Oakesdale. The winner faces the winner of the Neah Bay-Sunnyside Christian match; the loser faces the loser of that match, with the loser of the second match leaving the tournament.
