The Wahkiakum Mules advanced to the final round in last Saturday's Class 2B volleyball tournament but failed in their effort to qualify for the state tournament. The Mules opened their district tournament competition November 3 with a defeat of the Morton Huskies, 24-26, 26-24, 25-10 and 25-16. "Blaine Land had a great match with 19 kills and Jordyn Wirkkala added 11," said Mule Coach Jeff Rooklidge. "Amy Gawith had seven kills, and Evelyn Clark had three critical stuff blocks. Local runners fared well in the state Class B Cross Country meet last Saturday at Sun Willows Golf Course, Pasco. Naselle Comet Cramer Smith, a sophomore, finished in 18th place in 17:56. Team mate Nathan Reitz, a junior, was 28th in 18:21. For the Wahkiakum Mules, Bradley Pugh, a senior, finished 25th in 18:18 and Collan Riley, a sophomore, finished 52nd in 18:56. The $3 million ferry ramp replacement project for the Wahkiakum ferry is finally underway. The plan has taken six years and hundreds of sometimes frustrating man hours to set in motion. “This all started before I got here,” said Wahkiakum Public Works Director Pete Ringen. The Wahkiakum County board of commissioners formally adopted new ferry fares and handled other items of business when it met Tuesday. Public Works Director Pete Ringen said the August Hanson Bridge over the Elochoman River at Beaver Creek should be open this Friday. The contractor is trying to complete paving and finish work this week, and bad weather could delay the opening. The new ferry fares take effect January 1. The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce reviewed plans for winter events and prepared for elections when it met Tuesday in Cathlamet. The Festival of Trees will start later this month.
