We woke up this morning to four gunshots, not a real surprise as we had hunters on the property. It turned out to be a really successful hunt for Alan Gregory and Mark Zimmerman. The South Bend Indian football team took advantage of six Wahkiakum Mule turnovers to claim a 35-7 victory in the opening round of Class 2B state football playoffs last Saturday. The hosts kicked off to the Mules and stopped the visitors' drive. South Bend then drove the length of the field in nine plays and went ahead 6-0 . Rosburg, Washington resident Wallace L. “Wally” Smalley, 71, a life long resident of Wahkiakum county, died in Longview, Washington on November 3, 2010. The son of pioneer Wahkiakum county residents Daniel and Signe (Buhakka) Smalley, he was born in Cathlamet, Washington on October 26, 1939. Wally was a 1957 graduate of Naselle High School and attended Lower Columbia College in Longview for two years. He was a 40 year employee of the Wahkiakum county road department. Hilda Martha Herrman Sperle, 95, passed away on November 3, 2010, in Preston, Idaho. She was born June 21, 1915, in Ingomar, Montana, the daughter of Soloman H. and Lydia Stoebner Herrman. She married Theodore Sperle on September 24, 1936, in Eureka, South Dakota. He preceded her in death on December 6, 1987. She loved to bake, cook and sew. She made hundreds of beautiful pillows. Each year the fair board has a big list of things to do before winter sets in. Some of our equipment is pressure washed and then stored on higher ground for the winter. With the help of Pete Ringen, Dean Seaberg and Larry Hendrickson, we were able to get some of our equipment moved last week. Officers of the Cathlamet Fire Department are becoming locked in a battle with Mayor George Wehrfritz over who will control the department. In mid-October, Wehrfritz told department officers he wanted the department's record keeping done by town hall staff, and he and department personnel met to go over the process. The ferry "Wahkiakum" went out of service several hours Wednesday for replacement of a pontoon at the Puget Island ramp. Wahkiakum County Public Works Department scheduled a two-day closure but said the ferry would resume service sooner if the work was done faster than expected. Bergerson Construction of Astoria is replacing the pontoon. A subcontractor used a Mexican firm and Mexican steel to construct the pontoon, which violates federal grant funding provisions and put the $2.3 million grant funding in jeopardy....
Wahkiakum County elections were settled Friday as county election officers counted approximately 350 votes which arrived too late to be counted on election day. With only a couple dozen ballots remaining to be counted, the totals settled local races. Challenger Bill Coons, who ran as an Independent, defeated incumbent Sulema Zerr, a Republican, in the race for county assessor by a vote of 1,254-751. The Washington State Auditor’s Office recently issued the results of their audit of the Wahkiakum Conservation District (WCD) financial statements for January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2009. The auditor’s office examined evidence to support the figures contained in the financial statements and also looked at the reports to test that the WCD had put in place proper internal controls over financial reporting.
