The Pe Ell Trojans won a tight 3-0 match with the Wahkiakum Mules last Friday to earn a trip to the state volleyball tournament and end the Mules' season. Pe Ell won the match 25-22, 27-25, 25-22. "Pe Ell has two very talented and tall middle hitters, and we had a difficult time slowing them down and defending their attacks," said Mule Coach Jeff Rooklidge. "Each set was tight and close, but Pe Ell was able to make more plays at crunch time and we played a little tentative at times. Blaine Land and Tori Wegdahl led the team in kills with 19...

The Naselle Comets pounded out a 49-18 win over the Wahkiakum Mules in the opening of the state football playoffs last Saturday in Naselle. The win also gave the Comets continued possession of the KM Trophy. The Mules, fifth place in the Central League, gave the Comets, Pacific League champion and ranked second last week in the Associated Press football poll, all they could handle in the first half. In the second half, the Comets' size advantage began to tell, and the mistake prone Mules weren't able to keep up with their hosts. The Comets...
MAYBE THIS WEEK?--Last week the forecasters predicted rain every day. Thankfully, they were wrong, and after a few very cold and foggy days, we actually had some sunny, decent days. This week, I've seen rain forecast for every day, or a big storm coming, but so far, it hasn't been all that bad. Of course, things change quickly around here, so w'll take the sun while we have it. With the unexpected drop in temperatures last week, a few folks found themselves unthawing pipes and pumps, which is never a good sign this early. As most of us were...

Federal agencies may have found a way to deal with erosion that threatens the dike protecting the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge for the White-tailed Deer. The Columbia River has been eroding the bank and Steamboat Slough dike downstream from Hornstra's Beach. Wahkiakum County has closed one lane of traffic on the road on the dike above the eroding shoreline. The US Fish and Wildlife Service may have funds to build another dike further away from the eroding shoreline, county Commissioner Lisa Marsyla announced Tuesday. Marsyla has...

Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday wrapped up their final budget preparation work by considering a request from Assessor Bill Coons for a special project and a review of the Prosecuting Attorney's Office budget. Coons has tried unsuccessfully several times this year to convince the board of commissioners to fund extra help for his office as he tries to catch up office duties. Commissioners have allowed him to restructure his staff but refused to comply with all of Coons's requests, saying they have refused to boost extra help funds for...
To The Eagle: Here's an update on the Skamokawa Post office situation. So far we have just received standard responses to our letters involving our Skamokawa Post Office and whether or not we are going to be able to keep it here, where it's been since 1873! I was a bit annoyed to see that being able to buy stamps from our carrier as a main focus in the response letter from the Discontinuance Office, which was the least of our concerns, not to mention that we already knew we could do that, so that was hardly an issue, but it seemed to be the onl...
To The Eagle: "The Eagle has landed." Words of Neil Armstrong landing the lunar module in 1969 or the title of a novel in 1975. Today, however, it has a less elegant connotation: it indicates that our newspaper, The Eagle, has landed clumsily, feathers flying, on one side of a local government problem that has degenerated into a political squabble. The Eagle received an e-mail from write-in candidate Dale Jacobson criticizing the mayor and incumbent councilor Steve McNicholas (Dale's target of opportunity) for their handling of the financial...
