Despite an extremely slow start offensively, the defense kept the team in the game long enough for the offense to awaken and score 40 second-half points. John Chambers led the team with 16 points and 4 assists while Lars Blix added 13 points and six boards. Chaput just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds wh...

  • Weather causing lots of problems

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 20, 2011

DRYING OUT--Wow, was that a wild weekend or what? Just when you thought the rain would slow down, it started back up and boy, oh boy, it did not take long for the "lakes" to appear and spill over onto our roadways, which caused some of the usual road closures in our area. However, the big thing comes when the water starts to scour out from under the roadways as you never know when you go through the standing water, whether the pavement has any support under it. I'm not sure what the total amount of rain was, but in one 24 hour period, there was...

  • Weather system brings floods, slides

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 20, 2011

Wahkiakum County residents experienced flooding and land slides in a wet, rainy weekend. A wet weather system dumped 4.6 inches of rain in Cathlamet, 5.5 inches at the Town of Cathlamet water plant in the Elochoman Valley between 10 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday. The heavy rain sent county streams out of their banks; residents of the Grays River, Elochoman and Skamokawa Creek basins all saw water over their roads. Some roads in the Grays River valley remained flooded and closed Monday. Land...

  • Stronger timber market means more income for county

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 20, 2011

A booming economy in China is providing some good news for Wahkiakum County government: The boom in building across the Pacific Ocean has created a demand for Pacific Northwest timber that has spurred a rise in revenue off state-managed, county trust lands. The revenue from trust timber land provides a large portion of the revenue for the county's Current Expense Fund, which finances most courthouse offices. County commissioners based their 2011 budget on a total of $1.3 million, and timber revenues should be close to that, representatives of...

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 20, 2011

Commissioners of Port District No. 2 of Wahkiakum County awarded a contract for tree thinning and voted to begin paying water and sewer bills for the port district office when they met Tuesday. Port officials have been planning a selective cut of potentially dangerous trees since a tree fell on a camper's recreational vehicle last winter (no one was injured). Commission Chair Brian O'Connor said the district's insurance carrier has been pressing for removal of dangerous trees. The district received bids from two local loggers to trim the trees....

  • New substation under consideration

    Ruby Murray|Jan 20, 2011

Wahkiakum PUD is moving to build a new substation beside its Cathlamet substation for greater capacity and to minimize power outages. The board of commissioners discussed the project at its regular board meeting Tuesday. The project’s cost of $2.9 million would include construction and a new transformer for $600,000, said PUD manager Dave Tramblie. The board is strategizing lowest cost financing, and working with engineers to design the station. The costs of financing to ratepayers could be as low as $5 per month, based on the terms the distric...

    Ruby Murray|Jan 20, 2011

Port District 1 hopes to replace a section of the F-dock, but it needs a permit from the US Corps of Engineers for in-stream work. The district board strategized how to get the letter of permission it needs at its regular meeting on January 13. The dock is scheduled to be delivered on February 15th. “If we don’t get permission, it sits in the parking lot ‘til next fall,” said port manager Jackie Lea. The US Corps of Engineers and Washington Fish and Wildlife set the in-water-work window for the port between January 11th and February 28. The...

  • Taxation without representation?

    Jan 20, 2011

To The Eagle: The front page article of The Eagle, January 13, 2011 about the Puget Island property assessments and a face to face discussion with our new assessor Bill Coons seems to lead one to conclude that property owners will not be able to contest any new assessments. Not being able to contest assessments will force property owners to pay the inflated tax rate for this coming year and maybe for the next four years. This appears to be a case of taxation without representation. P.J. Fleury Puget Island...

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 20, 2011

Flooded in again! It wasn’t too bad until Sunday and we couldn’t get any of the vehicles out. The ducks are in heaven though. Our dogs have discovered that if they wade into the water under the trees, they can pick the mice out of the lower branches and have a snack. Of course sometimes you have to share with the other dogs. News from Naselle: The Naselle Drama Club will host a Musical Variety Show on Friday at 7 p.m. Donations will be accepted at the door to help defray some of the Drama Club costs. Enjoy a fun filled evening of family ent...
