There will be an informational meeting for those interested in youth club volleyball November 14 at 6 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. Coordinator Patty Anderson said the club will be running two teams this year. There will be a 12 and under team for 4th, 5th and 6th graders and a 14 and under team for 7th and 8th graders. Wahkiakum Mule senior Walker Riley finished ninth overall at the Washington Class B Cross Country Meet last Saturday in Pasco. Riley finished the 5k course in 17:49. Matt Cronrath of Odessa won the meet in 16:40. Riley competed in the state meet as a sophomore and junior. Last year he finished in sixth place. The Town of Cathlamet has implemented an updated computerized billing system. Customers of the town’s water and sewer system should have noticed a change in their recent bills, Mayor Dick Swart said this week. Larger blue statement postcards have replaced the smaller white cards as part of the town’s updating of its computerized utility billing system and software. The Wahkiakum Lady Mules volleyball team earned a berth to state by winning three of four games at the district playoffs at Montesano on Saturday. The Wahkiakum Mule football season came to end last Saturday as the Mossyrock Vikings won a three-way tiebreaker for the Central League's third and final playoff berth. The Mules ended the regular season with a 34-8 loss to the Toutle Lake Ducks on November 1. The two teams entered the game tied for second; the win put the Ducks in second place and left the Mules tied with Mossyrock and the Napavine Tigers for third. Two Wahkiakum High School graduates have become leaders on the defensive team of the Eastern Oregon University Mountaineer football team. Sophomores Jeff McNally, Rosedale, and Terrence Pharr, Puget Island, won starting positions on the defense last year as freshmen and have become two of the team's defensive leaders. Anyone knowing of a family who needs some extra assistance this year is asked to get in touch with Health and Human Services. Donations of food items, turkeys or financial contributions may be dropped off at one of the county's two food banks or at Health and Human Services for it to be forwarded to the food banks. Second time is apparently a charm for Blair Brady, Democrat candidate for county commissioner representing District 3, Skamokawa and the Westend. The Friends of Skamokawa Foundation will hold its annual meeting on November 11 at 3 p.m. in the Riverlife Interpretive Center at Redmen Hall in Skamokawa. St. James Family Center Executive Director Beth Hansen wants the community to know that while funding from Wahkiakum County has been cut, programs have not. Funding two years ago was $35,000 and last year was cut in half to $17,500. This year, county commissioners have told Hansen the funding has been cut to nothing. Hansen said Tuesday that the cuts hurt because the money is used for programs when other funding sources can’t be found, such as for the after-school programs, Kindercare, child care programs and the preschool programs. The advisory committee working with the Wahkiakum Family Practice Clinic continues to work at the drawing board. The committee had hoped to hire two new nurse practioners, one this fall and one in early 2008. The committee had extended a job offer to one candidate, but the candidate took a job closer to her home so she wouldn’t have to move. The second candidate withdrew her application to relocate with family in Portland. Three dozen Wahkiakum County residents or friends of Washington State University Cooperative Extension filled the county commissioners’ meeting room Tuesday to ask the board to reconsider axing Wahkiakum Extension from the 2008 budget. Staff of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) heard comments on the draft environmental impact statement for a proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal Tuesday in Cathlamet. Bradwood Landing, a branch of NorthernStar Natural Gas, is proposing to build the terminal at Bradwood, Ore., across the Columbia River from Puget Island. The proposal calls for building the receiving terminal, re-gassification facility and two or three large storage tanks at Bradwood.
