  • Elk hoof disease research underway

    Rick Nelson|Nov 7, 2019

The effort to find the cause of elk hoof disease has turned into a scientific quest. The disease attacks the hooves of elk, eating away the foot and causing them to walk on soft tissue. The hooves grow long and can eventually slough off. The disease was first observed in southwest Washington but has been observed in Clallam County, the Skagit River valley, east of the Cascades in Washington and Oregon along the state line and into Idaho. Residents of southwest Washington have noticed a decrease...

  • Voters favor O'Connor, Wainwright, Richter

    Rick Nelson|Nov 7, 2019

In an election with low turnout, voters in Wahkiakum and Pacific counties joined others across the state in deciding few contested races and showing their will on statewide issues. In one of the few contested local races, Bill Wainwright defeated Janis Dodrill 76-42 in a race for a position on the Cathlamet Town Council. In another contested local race, incumbent Brian O'Connor held off challenger Austin Smith in a race for a seat on the Port District 2 board of commissioners, 241-166. In a contested race for Pacific/Wahkiakum Superior Court...

  • Neewollah Day fun

    Nov 7, 2019

Tricks and treats were up for grabs at the annual Neewollah Day Celebration at the Bank of the Pacific last Thursday. Children, adults, and even some dogs came in costume. One participant, Henri Ervest, fully embraced his logger costume and attempted to cut down the bank's sign. There were balloon animals, a raffle and prizes, lots of candy, and to be sure, the piñata was a real hit. See more photos at www.waheagle.com. Photos by Diana Zimmerman....

  • Why are we paying more than $30 for car tabs?

    Nov 7, 2019

To The Eagle: Last year I wrote to our legislators about why our renewal for car licensing had risen from $30 to $63.75 (this year went up to $68.25). I received a response from Damon Monroe who is the Rule Coordinator for DOL. This is his reply: “We apologize for not getting back to you sooner. We have reviewed the list of fees and concerns noted in the email sent to Governor Inslee and various legislators. We understand your concerns about the fees; however all of these fees are required by state law and can only be changed through l...

  • Often repeating a lie doesn't make it true

    Nov 7, 2019

To The Eagle, Let’s straighten out one twisted fact mentioned in an opinion piece last week. I refer to the repeated lie that “Hillary Clinton sold 20 percent of our uranium to Russia,” Folks who have casually smeared Clinton’s reputation by Trumpeting fake facts about her performance at the state department will no longer be receiving a free pass to traffic in such innuendos. The verifiable facts are these. In 2010 Rosatom, a Russian nuclear power consortium, purchased controlling interest in Uranium One, an American uranium mining company...

  • Thou dost protest too much

    Nov 7, 2019

To The Eagle: Egads! Gadzooks! The neighborly contretemps over fact versus opinion has at last slipped the bonds of civility, and we stand accused of both uttering untruths and bearing false witness. Exegesis follows: Hillary’s crimes are real and well-documented, the prime exemplar being her illicit server in which she stored classified material and which was hacked by numerous outside actors. She was investigated by the FBI and exonerated by then-Director Comey who lacked authority to do so. Indeed, the whole fact free Trump/Russia witch h...

  • Coming Events--Community Center in Cathlamet

    Meadow Meeder, Healthy Community Specialist|Nov 7, 2019

As I was growing up, my Dad used to tell me ‘your health is an investment that you give to your future self.’ It took me a while to understand what he meant, but I get it now. This day and age, the word ‘health’ encompasses a broad spectrum of facets in our lives- from potential improvements to complete life changing events, our health is always on the table. Even though most of us know that our best health directly affects our output, it can seem impossible to attain at times. Mental health, physical health and emotional health must often t...

  • Local business had nice write up in magazine

    Kay Chamberlain|Nov 7, 2019

NOT TOO SHABBY--We have had some stunning sunsets around our area and I sure appreciate those who take pictures and post them on Facebook for all to see; they're gorgeous! We were down to 24 degrees out here a couple of days, but the sunshine that followed was awesome and by Saturday, it was even a bit warmer. Sunday had us "lost in a fog" in the morning, with the gray, damp morning being above freezing, but certainly not as pretty. Looks like more dry weather is expected for most of this week, with the raindrops possible towards the latter par...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Darrell Alexander|Nov 7, 2019

Halloween in the Westend The ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in) is the origin of Halloween nearly 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France. They celebrated their new year on November 1. This was the day that marked the end of summer and harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter. It was a time of year that was often associated with human death. The Celts believed that the night before the New Year, the border between the...

Commissioners and department heads have been discussing requests for two weeks, and the board completed that work Monday and Tuesday. The board agreed to follow recommendations of a salary committee to adjust wages and salaries of union, non-union and elected...

  • County weed control board rebuilds itself

    Diana Zimmerman|Nov 7, 2019

The Wahkiakum County Noxious Weed Control Board met on Monday to discuss how to begin dealing with milfoil in particular, as well as other invasive species, in a more proactive manner. Kyle Langan of Aquatechnix was on hand to answer questions about how the board might begin to tackle milfoil, which is clogging the Elochoman Slough Marina and other waterways in the county. Langan recommended a newer product, ProcellaCOR. “It kills the plant forever,” Langan said, “a fragment is going to have...

  • Lee Tischer: No more working on chain gang

    Diana Zimmerman|Nov 7, 2019

Lee Tischer once witnessed a sad scene at an away football game: An elderly man who volunteered on the sidelines, as a member of what Tischer affectionately calls the Chain Gang, was asked to give up his spot in the middle of the game when the home coach realized the man could not keep up with the offense. "He had to be pushing 80," Tischer said. The man walked round the track after, Tischer said, his head hung down. In the back of his mind, Tischer knew then that he would retire from the...
