    A Wahkiakum County ordinance banning the application of biosolids was overturned Tuesday, Nov. 4, by the Washington Court of Appeals, Division 2, in Pierce County. According to a Department of Ecology news release, the decision, that state law cannot be overridden by a local ordinance, was upheld by the court when it ruled that Wahkiakum County’s ordinance was unconstitutional and conflicts with state law.     Wednesday wins The Wahkiakum Mule volleyball team defeated the Toutle Lake Ducks 3-2 Wednesday evening to earn a trip the the state Class 2B Volleyball Tournament. Scores were 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 15-7. The win moved them into a match with Life Christian. They started slow, but when they kicked in, they took control to win 25-23, 25-15, 25-15. The county auditor's elections officers counted 1,492 votes and have another 200 that will be counted 9:30 this morning (Thursday). That count may well decide the Wahkiakum School District's request for a special levy to raise money for security and technology upgrades.     Last Saturday, the Wahkiakum Mule volleyball team took third place in district after winning two matches and avenging a loss to the team that put them in the consolation bracket. They head to Yakima this weekend for the State B Volleyball tournament. First they faced the Darrington Loggers and beat them in four sets, 25-17, 20-25, 25-20, 25-20.     The Wahkiakum Mule volleyball team beat Toutle Lake in five sets to earn a berth at state on Wednesday in Napavine, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 15-7. “It was a hard fought match on both sides of the court,” Coach Kayli Hurley said.     The Wahkiakum Mule 2014 football season came to a close in a 46-21 loss to the Toledo Indians last Thursday. The Mules had a bright start; they dumped the Toledo ball carrier for a four-yard loss on the game's first play from scrimmage. However, on the second play, the Toledo runner took off for a 63-yard touchdown. A conversion kick gave the hosts a 7-0 lead at 11:15 of the first quarter.     The Wahkiakum Mule cross country team ended their season on Saturday when they traveled to Rainier to compete in the 1B/2B District 4 Championships. The top 25 boys and top 20 girls will go on to state. The highest placing Mule runner was Mya Kirzy, who placed 40th in the girl’s race. In the boy’s 5,000 meter race, Mule seniors Luke Stacey, Elliott Haney and Nevan Bingham placed 69th, 74th and 77th respectively, out of 100 competitors.     Clam diggers could return to coastal beaches starting Tuesday, Nov. 4, to dig razor clams during the first of two planned openings in November. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) approved the latest round of evening digs after marine toxin test results showed the clams are safe to eat.
