    Yes, WSU Extension is still alive and well in Wahkiakum County. The office is open from 9 a.m. to noon and 12:30-4 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The office will also be open on Fridays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. depending upon volunteer availability. The WSU Extension office is located at 25 River Street, Suite E next to the PUD building in Cathlamet.     Our Haunted House fundraiser was a lot of fun, with screams of terror as well as delight, as families came together to enjoy the 4-H bake sale, carnival games and haunted house. The hot apple cider flowed as we laughed, screamed and worked together to raise money for next year’s fair.   • Wahkiakum youth finish season with 4-1 record

    Wahkiakum Youth Football team finished their season with a 4-1 record this year. Their victories included a 26-6 win over Swanson's, 14-0 against Columbia Ford, 20-6 against Toutle and 36-6 against Athlete's Corner. Their loss came against Castle Rock 7-20. The team finished in second place in the Lower Columbia Youth Football League that consists of Longview, Castle Rock, Toutle and Wahkiakum teams.     The housing market continues to be questionable in many areas of the United States; a survey of Wahkiakum County’s situation real estate business shows a range of opinion.     The Wahkiakum PUD board of commissioners met Tuesday to discuss a variety of topics. Monday’s county wide power outage was due to another utilities crew dropping a tree on a BPA 115 KV transmission line in the Vernonia area. The Town of Cathlamet has agreed to a new contract with the PUD over charges they deemed as inappropriately removed.     Commissioners and staff of Port District No. 2 of Wahkiakum County went over the proposed budget Tuesday evening and heard a proposal to add a marketing position to the workforce. After Port Manager Steve McClain had explained the preliminary budget proposal, Commissioner Kayrene Gilbertsen proposed adding a 10-month position to market the port and assist McClain in related work, such as establishing a port-district website.     The Adna Pirates edged the Wahkiakum Mules 14-6 in a hard-fought, defensive Central League football game last Friday. The loss knocked the Mules out of the hunt for one of the league's three berths in the post-season playoffs.     The Wahkiakum Mules finished second and the Naselle Comets finished third in last Saturday's Class B district cross country meet at St. Martin's College, Lacey. Both teams qualified for the state meet this Saturday at Sun Willows Golf Course, Pasco. Northwest Christian won the team championship with 18 points.     The Wahkiakum Mule volleyball team started district tournament competition yesterday (Wednesday) after The Eagle had gone to press. The Mules swept the visiting Morton Huskies 3-0 last week to finish in a three-way tie with Adna and Napavine for second place in Central League standings.     Wahkiakum County voters joined the rest of the United States Tuesday in electing the nation’s first African-American president, Senator Barack Obama of Illinois. Voters also returned Commissioner Dan Cothren to office for a third term and elected Lisa Marsyla as commissioner from District 1.     The Cathlamet Town Council and consulting engineers on Monday reviewed the predesign report for a new wastewater treatment plant. The council is nearing the point where it will make a decision on when and how the plant will be constructed.     While the Port of Portland dredge “Oregon” pumped spoils on the eroding East Sunny Sands shoreline this week, dredging to address erosion at the lower end of Puget Island will have to wait till summer of 2009. Commissioner George Trott reported Tuesday that the US Army Corps of Engineers wouldn’t have a dredge available for the work--the “Oregon” is scheduled to move elsewhere, and it would cost Wahkiakum County at least $750,000 to have a dredge move in to do the work this year.
