The league-leading and fourth ranked Adna Pirates shut out the Wahkiakum Mules 27-0 in a Central League football game last Friday at Adna. The win clinched the league championship for the Pirates; the loss left the Mules in a battle with the Mossyrock Vikings for the third and final playoff berth from the Central League. The Wahkiakum Mule volleyball team advanced to the second round of the district volleyball tournament by defeating Morton 24-26, 26-24, 25-10, 25-16 Tuesday at Montesano. Runners from the Wahkiakum Mule and Naselle Comet cross country teams will compete in this Saturday's state championship race. The top four teams and 20 individuals in the boys race and the top two teams and 10 individuals in the girls race advance to the championships on Saturday at Pasco. George Wehrfritz won the Cathlamet mayoral election as a write-in, defeating former Councilor John Hannah 107-58. In the race for a position on the Naselle/Grays River Valley School District board of directors, Position 2, write-in Michelle Condon defeated Mike Queener 202-151 in combined Pacific and Wahkiakum County voting. The Public Power Council (PPC) spoke recently with Wahkiakum PUD commissioners about the changes in the distribution of electricity here in Wahkiakum county and throughout the Northwest. Wahkiakum County commissioners discussed influenza, erosion along Grays River, a report on river patrol liabilities and other issues when they met Tuesday. Health Officer Jennifer Vines reported that the first wave of H1N1 (swine) flu infection apparently peaked last week in the county. "We had the first wave of H1N1 virus," she said. Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday approved increases in fares for the ferry Wahkiakum. The fares haven't been raised in 11 years. The new rates will be effective January 1.
