  • No Cooking Day November 13

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 4, 2010

Five and a quarter inches of rain in the bucket, five inches of water over the driveway, ducks, sea gulls and geese in the lake that is usually a pasture; I think winter is coming. The weatherman says a few days of sun are in store. Maybe we can get some more work done on the house. News from Naselle: Another win for the Naselle Comets with a score of 47-14 against Ocosta. Congratulations Team! Sports coming up this week include: Friday, the 5th- football crossover with Central League; Saturday, the 6th- cross country state meet at Pasco. What...

  • Mules pound the Light 41-8

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 4, 2010

The Wahkiakum Mule football team defeated the Vancouver Christian Light 41-8 to close out the 2010 regular football season last Friday. The Mules finished the season 5-3 in league play, fourth place, 5-4 overall. The Mules head to South Bend this Saturday for a matchup for the fourth place seed in the state playoffs. Zach Pierce caught a pass from Lars Blix and turned it into a 52-yard scoring play for the Mules at the start of the game. Blix passed to Ryan Helms for a two point conversion and 8-0 Mule lead at 11:50 of the first quarter....

    Nov 4, 2010

The Wahkiakum Mules rallied to defeat the Pe Ell Trojans 3-2 on Wednesday and remain in the hunt for a berth in the state tournament next week. They play Northwest Christian Friday, Nov. 5, 5:30 p.m., at Napavine. The loser is out, and the winner advances to state. Immediately after the 5:30 match, the winner will go to Adna to play another game at 7 p.m. for state tournament seeding; the winner of that game will be the third seed from District IV, and the loser will be the fourth seed....

  • Time to prepare for winter weather

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 4, 2010

SO-SO--As we ended one month and began another, the weather was a mixed bag of either sunshine, gorgeous out, like last Friday, or rain, which consumed a good deal of Saturday. Halloween, which was Sunday, began quite nice and didn't cloud up until the latter half of the day. However, November began with a very wet and miserable day, which caused "lakes" to form in a big hurry. If this is a sign of things to come, it looks like we'd better keep a close watch on our creeks and streams as we don't want to be caught unaware in a flood situation....

  • Wildlife agents arrest two in poaching case

    Nov 4, 2010

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife agents arrested two men last Friday in connection with reports of poaching on Bradley Mountain. One of the men, age 38, will appear in Wahkiakum District Court November 17 on a variety of charges, including using an unlawful weapon to hunt deer, spotlighting, and hunting in a closed season. Beaver Creek Road residents reported last week hearing shots and seeing people in a blue station wagon acting as if they were hunting deer during the closed season. Fish and Wildlife Officer Pat Anderson and Sgt....

  • PUD proposes budgets for 2011

    Betsy Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 4, 2010

Wahkiakum PUD commissioners continued discussion on their preliminary 2011 budget at their meeting Tuesday. PUD Auditor Erin Wilson and administrative staff prepared a separate draft budget for each area of operation--the electric system, the Puget Island Water System, and the Western Wahkiakum Water System. The PUD anticipates total electrical revenues of $3,268,540, a decrease of about $92,000 compared to 2010 annualized revenue. The total cost of purchased power plus taxes is also projected to drop, from $1,533,359 to $1,522,125. Expenses...

  • Naselle board hears concerns of teachers

Cody Cooley and Betsy Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 4, 2010

The Naselle-Grays River School Board listened to staff reports and heard from a representative of the bargaining group for local teachers at their meeting October 19. Tim Kopp, president of the Naselle-Grays River Education Association which represents the teachers that work in the district, spoke about in-process contract negotiations for next year. He reported that he will be stepping back from the negotiations process for teachers Rudy Rudolph, Mitzi Hunter, and Brian Macy to take over. Kopp clarified that teachers in the district are aware...

  • Health department staffer receives statewide award

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 4, 2010

Marnee Davis, receptionist for the Wahkiakum County Health Department has been awarded a statewide award for her work in the county's branch of the national Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. The program provides nutritional advice and aid for mothers and children from pregnancy through age five years. "I would say this is one of the most important programs in this country for children," said Health and Human Services Director Judy Bright. Davis has been working in the program and coordinating services for 13 years. Bright said Davis...

  • Flu season poses few concerns for now

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 4, 2010

What a difference a year makes. In November, 2009, people around the world were preparing for a pandemic outbreak of H1N1 influenza, also known as swine flu. After an outbreak in Mexico, public health officials scrambled to develop a vaccine for the strain and get it to vulnerable individuals. This year, said Dr. Jennifer Vines, Wahkiakum County health officer, there have been no major outbreaks of any flu strain; the H1N1 vaccine is included in the seasonal vaccine, and it is available for all who wish to be vaccinated. "There's not a lot to...

  • Election:Coons, Dearmore, Reid lead; Brady, Bigelow re-elected

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 4, 2010

Some Wahkiakum County elections were settled Tuesday as county election officers counted votes, and some were still up in the air. Challenger Bill Coons, who ran as an Independent, defeated incumbent Sulema Zerr, a Republican, in the race for county assessor by a vote of 1,043-638. Jon Dearmore defeated challenger Troy Norris 1,398-259 in the election for county sheriff. Both ran as Independents. Incumbent Prosecuting Attorney Dan Bigelow, a Democrat, defeated challenger Dennis Gordon, no party preference, 978-631 in the election for that...

  • Commissioners OK second phase of ferry rate increases

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 4, 2010

For the second time in two years, ticket prices for the ferry Wahkiakum will increase on January 1. Wahkiakum County Commissioners Blair Brady, Dan Cothren and Lisa Marsyla on Tuesday affirmed their desire to follow through on increases they adopted a year ago. At that time, they said, ferry commuters had asked that the increases be spread out so that they didn't create such a big financial impact. Rates hadn't been raised in 10 years when the board acted last fall. They boosted the prices of commuter tickets from $75 for 44 trips to $100; now...

  • Health care system needs to change

    Nov 4, 2010

To The Eagle: Now that our elections are over, I can say what I want to say without being accused of "thumping" for one candidate or another (by golly, I am sick of this election!) I am motivated to write this letter to the editor after hearing for the third time in recent weeks a Cathlamet person say, "I don't think I can afford my medication." I am, I think rightly, upset when I hear people that I view as responsible, normal citizens of various ages state that they cannot afford medications for diseases such as heart trouble, diabetes, and...

  • Havoc wrought by federal government

    Nov 4, 2010

To The Eagle: We just returned from a fortnight odyssey to Wichita, where our six Irish Wolfhounds served as the reception line at Judy's mom's 90th birthday party. The visit was delightful but the drive, over on the northerly routes and back along old Route 66, was a graphic tour of the havoc wrought by a federal government trying to turn us into a European style social democracy by strangling free enterprise in a web of taxation, regulation, and litigation. The southwest looks particularly hard hit, and southern California is all shabby, bump...

  • County can't afford more public housing

    Nov 4, 2010

To The Eagle: The Eagle Point apartments are a great example of public housing in Wahkiakum County. Before the county provided a low interest loan, there were promises made. The local property taxes would be paid on the million dollar project, they now pay based on a $53,000 assessed value of the land prior to construction. Not much support of schools, police and fire. The project was developed with half the units getting low rents and half market rate. The market rate units sat vacant. Solution, project based vouchers. This means if you want...

  • Be aware of salmon poisoning in dogs

    Nov 4, 2010

To The Eagle: I just lost a dog to salmon poisoning. I did not know about this disease, I did not realize it is endemic in our area, and I did not recognize the symptoms (lethargy, anorexia, diarrhea, vomiting, depression, possible fever). The veterinarian said that at this time of year, she encounters a dog a week that dies from this disease--in many instances, the dog's person was as ignorant as I. Salmon poisoning manifests five to seven days after the dog eats raw salmon or trout, possibly dropped by eagles. If it is identified early, it...
