  • Mule wrestlers bring home medals

    Jan 13, 2011

The Wahkiakum Mule wrestling team after putting in another week of great work has received the pay off for their labor. The last week of competition started with a mix-n-match in Ocosta with the other league teams. All of the wrestlers performed well with spectacular pins coming from Dylan Hansen at 285 and Brandon Burdick at 152. "Our light weights, Blayne Edwards (103), Jesus Crawford (112) and Mason Mackey all went undefeated that night, even after bumping up a weight class apiece in an effort to find some competition," said Coach Matt...

  • Mules maul T-wolves, fall to Napavine

    David McNally, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 13, 2011

Fans who showed up for the Mules’ latest home game witnessed a milestone many have probably never seen in a varsity-level game. After trailing 27-24 at the half to Morton-White Pass, the Mules came out fiery in the second half and mopped the floor with the visiting Timberwolves en route to a 58-33 shellacking. The astonishing feat? In the second half the Mules’ defense held the T-wolves offense to just 6 points, all via free throws, while forcing them to go 0 for 26 from the field. Leading the Mules offensively were Lars Blix and Wyatt Par...

The Wahkiakum Lady Mules basketball team split their Central League basketball games this week. Last Thursday, the Lady Mules defeated the Morton-White Pass Timberwolves 46-41. The Mules led 26-24 at halftime and outscored the home team 15-10 in the fourth quarter to claim the win. Shelby Felton led the Mule scoring with 16 points. Caitlin Nicolazzi had eight, Brieanna Olsen seven, Brianne Helms, Maya Stanley and Haylee Budd had four apiece, Blaine Land two and Ellee Crouse one. On Tuesday, the Mules faltered in the second half and lost 59-40...

  • Get ready, the snow is coming soon

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 13, 2011

WEATHER--Can you say nippy? We started this week with a light layer of snow in West Valley and all the hills around me are quite white, so in spite of the warming trend we had with some rain showers that quickly melted the snow in my yard, it was still white in the hills. On Monday evening, it was a very brisk 24 degrees, so my water was dripping and I was thinking, "well, if it starts to snow, it will definitely stick--ugh!" Before sending this in on Tuesday morning, it has the "snow look" in the sky. The temperature has risen, and the wind...

  • Officials seek path to address high property assessments

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 13, 2011

Wahkiakum County officials are searching for a way to lower taxes. New Assessor Bill Coons and the Wahkiakum County Board of Equalization agree that 2010 assessments on Puget Island were higher than they should have been. Coons said Tuesday that he and the board had done independent studies of sale values and reached the same conclusions. "The issue is, what is a fair value for property on Puget Island," Coons said. "We both reached the conclusion that the assessed values are too high." Both, however, are searching for a way to address the...

  • New golf course manager brings optimism

    Ruby Murray|Jan 13, 2011

Kuldip Vaid calls Skyline Golf Course and Driving Range the emerald jewel of Cathlamet. The course’s new operator says he fell in love with it when he first saw it last March. “It clicked the first time,” said Vaid, who was living in Beaverton when he learned about it on Craig’s List. Vaid’s enthusiasm for the course is palpable. “There’s a different view from each of the holes,” he said. The view from the club house across Puget Island to the ridges in Oregon is stellar. Vaid has a 25-year lease and has learned the daily maintenance the course...

  • County discusses office hours, biosolids

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 13, 2011

Wahkiakum County commissioners handled a variety of business ranging from office hours to a biosolids ordinance when they met Tuesday. The board delayed action on a request from Assessor Bill Coons to modify the hours of his office and work schedule of his appraiser. Coons proposed having the appraiser condense his normal five work days into four longer days to cut down on his commuting time. Coons also said he himself would like to work 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and would keep the office open one hour past the traditional 4 p.m. closing time in the...

  • Council rescinds rate increase for port park models

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 13, 2011

Facing possible law suits over application of ordinances, the Cathlamet town council on Monday rescinded a motion it passed in December regarding sewer service fees for the park model cabins at the Elochoman Slough Marina. Council members voted to amend the ordinance which sets the fees to include new forms of transient housing such as motels, bed and breakfasts, and the park models. The existing ordinance contains no definition of motels or park models, and council members in December felt they had to assess fees as if the cabins were for...

  • Exciting changes due for Johnson Park

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 13, 2011

Another weird week of weather. It looks like all the gloom and doom forecasts have just about missed us so far. It makes me wonder how much these folks get paid, with all the high tech equipment, and still can’t get it even close to right. Maybe they should have a window put in their offices, and look outside before they give a forecast. Be advised, though, the bad weather warnings need to be heeded, just in case. Living in the country makes it difficult to run out and get what you need at a moments notice. Make sure you keep supplies on h...
