  • Holiday season beginning here

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 3, 2011

NOT BAD--As this work week started we had a mostly nice day, as only a few showers came down here and there. Better yet, by nightfall, it seemed very dry and it was a perfect night for all those trick or treaters and we trust you only got treats and no tricks on Halloween night! As the week progresses, they say we may be in for a week or more of rain every day--ugh! Even snow levels are dropping. Let's hope what we get is just light rain as I'm not ready to face any flooding situations just yet! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from No...

  • Write-in candidate opposes mayor's actions

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 3, 2011

Cathlamet Councilmember Steven McNicholas is facing a write-in challenge in this week's general election. Cathlamet native Dale Jacobson this week said he is challenging McNicholas for the latter's apparent support of Mayor George Wehrfitz's efforts to restructure the financial practices of the Cathlamet Fire Department. "Having served a small community in the past, I realized something is just plain wrong with our mayor's recent reckless actions," Jacobson said in a statement to The Eagle this week. • Census: Little change locally in 10 years

    Ruby Murray|Nov 3, 2011

The 2010 census provides no big surprises for Wahkiakum county residents. The county grew four percent, from 3824 in 2000 to 3978. Averages can be misleading, but they offer food for thought. Wahkiakum County lines up with Washington state on many indices: --The population is about 50 percent women. --The number of people in households in the county and the state are 2 ½. --In 2009, the number of people in poverty in Wahkiakum was 13 percent, slightly over the state average of 12 percent. --Ninety-two percent of people over 25 in...

Jon Blair Peterson has applied for the permit to build a temporary pound trap in the Columbia River just downstream of Nassa Point. Peterson said any fish caught in the trap would be released after the Washington...

  • Problems will be solved by honesty, not politics

    Nov 3, 2011

To The Eagle: I kinda liked old Richard Nixon. He normalized relations with China and did much to tidy up the messy situation in Southeast Asia before his henchmen committed some minor felonious acts at the Watergate and he chose to stonewall and cover up. I had the solution to his problems: release the mysterious tapes, admit the foul-up and press on. But he didn't (son-of-a-gun didn't even call me) and the rest is history. We're at a similar tipping point right here in River City. Our world class Cathlamet Fire Department is required by law...

  • Care center administrator addresses concerns

    Nov 3, 2011

To The Eagle: I am writing to get ahead of a story that will son be coming out about Columbia View Care Center. Every year, each nursing home in the state has a review conducted by state surveyors. Columbia View just finished this review. Sadly we did not fare well in the eyes of the reviewers. It seemed like every time something could go wrong for us, it did. I could go on at length about the process and what was found during the investigation, but The Eagle (happily for the reader in this case,) has a policy about the maximum length of a lett...
