Wahkiakum County Port 1 began their second season of dredging today (Thursday). The window for dredging is open from November 1 until February 28. The port will begin dredging at the fuel dock and move out to the channel until December 31, and work inside the marina during the months of January and February, as their permit allows. On Tuesday, the dredging crew was building a spillway and pool at the site of the former sewer ponds. The pool will hold the dredge spoils that will be pumped from th...
The Broadband Action Committee met on Monday evening to get an update from the Wahkiakum PUD, the lead agency on the project and hear from some locals about why this is a community issue. Wahkiakum PUD General Manager Dave Tramblie said that they were nearly ready to submit an application to the Washington State Department of Commerce’s Community Economic Revitalization Board for a $50,000 feasibility grant. The due date for this round of applications is November 26. Tramblie approached the W...
Wahkiakum county officials this week wrapped up initial steps in preparing their preliminary budgets for 2019. County commissioners met with department heads and others to go over requests line by line. Officials usually express concern that revenue for the Current Expense Fund, which finances most courthouse offices, will be insufficient, but this year they’re saying the picture looks promising. In the past couple years, the county commission has diverted funds from the County Road Levy to Current Expense to cover shortfalls, but that s...
As voters were preparing to return their vote by mail ballots this past week, a candidate for District 19 state representative faced late challenges. After a news story in the Chinook Observer reported Democrat incumbent Brian Blake has paid former staff member and short term legislator J.D. Rosetti $65,000 for campaign printing and advertising services, Republican opponent Joel McEntire accused Blake of cronyism by channeling an unnecessary amount of campaign funds into his friend’s new business. Rosetti began operating a start-up Minuteman P...

A letter to the editor in the Oct. 18 edition by Tony Cleveland incorrectly referred to a candidate for Congress. The correct name is Carolyn Long. Also, a story in that edition about Wahkiakum Mule football credited the touchdown to James Anderson who normally wears the number 22 jersey; he had been injured before the game and didn't play; Evan Quigley came out of the interior line and wore number 22....
To The Eagle: A book sale was held at Cathlamet Public Library on Saturday to raise money for the library. I would like to extend a huge thank you to some very dedicated and hard-working volunteers. On my way to the library, I noticed another dedicated group of volunteers working hard to Tidy up the Town. Thank you! A little kindness goes a long way. Our community is wonderful in so many ways, and I hope we can all keep that in mind as we approach November 6th. Please don't forget to exercise your right to vote! I believe we have a...
Last week's issue carried a letter to the editor by Karen Cressa taking Assessor Bill Coons to task for a floral bouquet delivered to her. She called the inscription on the accompanying card ("Love you too, Karen) "an offensive, condescending jibe." The Eagle contacted Coons for a response, which didn't make it into last week's edition. Here it is: "On October 11, I ordered six bouquets delivered. Two went to supporters, one to a letter writer, one to The Eagle, and one to my wife. The last one went to Karen Cressa. I wanted to try a nice...

The Lady Mules split games, first beating Northwest Christian out of Lacey, Wash., in three sets: 25-11, 25-19, and 25-18 and then losing to the number one Pacific League team, Ocosta in four sets: 31-33, 15-25, 25-14, and 19-25....

At Raymond's suggestion, the 7 p.m. game has been moved to Stewart Field in Aberdeen to avoid the Gulls' muddy field. "They're a good team," Mule Coach Eric Hansen said of the Gulls. "They have two good linemen...
