The Wahkiakum Mules overcame a slow start to beat the Toutle Lake Ducks 38-7 in their final game of the regular season last Friday night. The Mules finish the regular season with a 6-2 record, good for third place in the Central League. On Friday, the visiting Ducks gave the Mules field position in the first quarter but played good enough defense to keep the Mules out of the endzone. That lasted till the first play of the second quarter when quarterback Gunnar Blix followed a wall of blockers...

NOT BAD--If it weren't for the heavy fog in the early morning hours and some of the evening hours, the days have been pretty decent lately. We had a dash of rain in the night on Saturday, so things were pretty damp Sunday morning, but with the sun coming out and brightening up the orange and yellow foilage, it looked like a pretty nice fall day. More scattered showers are expected this week after a freezing Monday evening and Tuesday morning, but hopefully they won't turn into downpours and things will be fairly dry this evening, as this is...

Town of Cathlamet moved their 2014 budgets closer to balance at a workshop meeting Monday morning. The council had passed the budget October 21 for the first of three readings with the general fund in a $54,000 deficit. Mayor George Wehrfritz opened the meeting by announcing that he and Clerk/Treasurer Tina Schubert had identified some cuts and revenue increases that would lower the deficit to approximately $28,743. "We asked the fire department to make a reduction of $5,000 and the library a reduction of $2,000," he said. Many of the revenue...
Cathlamet resident Sheila Mace worked in schools for most of her adult life. It was while working at Three Rivers Christian in Longview that she first met members from Americorps. They spent time with kids who were struggling with reading and completed projects in the classrooms for the teachers After seven years in a preschool, 13 years in an elementary school and another year working in a child development center, Mace was ready for a change. “I still love the kids but I was ready to stretch my skills a little more and be challenged in a d...
Last spring, fearing burnout for the dwindling number of certified volunteer emergency medical technicians (EMTs), the Wahkiakum County Emergency Management Council (EMS) sent out a call for help for volunteers. The daunting number of hours required for training and continuing education and a lack of pay filtered initial interest down to a class of six with a heart for service and a love for community. For three months, the six met for training two nights a week and on several Saturdays in...
The ferry "Wahkiakum" is undergoing repair to a cracked hull and may be back in operation late this week. Crewmen discovered a leaking crack in the hull on October 23, and the ferry was taken out of service for repair. Wahkiakum County Public Works Director said Tuesday that the ferry had arrived in dry dock in Astoria that day and was examined by a US Coast Guard inspector. Some removal of the area of concern will occur first, Ringen said, and then the Coast Guard will re-inspect. Depending on what is found, the ship yard may or may not be...
Wahkiakum County officials have completed their first round of meetings to go over preliminary request for the 2014 budgets. After their last meeting with a department head on Tuesday, Commissioners Dan Cothren, Blair Brady and Mike Backman said they would take a break and then reconvene to start whittling down the requests. "We're $530,000 out of whack," Brady said. "Short." Sheriff Mark Howie, one of the last to talk with the board, had two big requests for the board. First, the state funds that finance the position of the Emergency Services...
Late Tuesday afternoon, a baker’s dozen gathered at the Marina to celebrate Drop Anchor Brewery’s ground breaking ceremony. Blue skies and a warm sun promised good weather for the contractor, even if the local news did not. “It should take us two and a half months to complete the project, said Bill Hahn, Contractor for Better Home Construction in Longview. “Weather permitting, of course.” Local contractors George and James Trott staked out the site and were expected to begin moving dirt on W...
To The Eagle: My name is George Cameron and I have visited County Line Park for several years with my wife and family. I am an avid salmon fisherman and have a 28’ motorhome. County Line Park is very unique in the fact that one can park and relax in the sun literally feet from where you want to fish. Recently I’ve heard disturbing rumors about the park being sold to a private organization and that the wonderful park hosts, Bob and Arloa McLean, are being evicted with little notice. I have had the profound pleasure of knowing and dealing wit...

To The Eagle: Flattering as it is to be considered as a “write-in” candidate for a town council position, I have no interest in running for office. I am no eleventh hour candidate, and did not ask for any endorsements. No one asked for my permission before putting up a sign with my name on it. Frankly, I was embarassed. My only interest in the 2013 politics is to support Mike Balch for sheriff. Amid implied allegations of improprieties by our side of the campaign for sheriff, I wish to state that I, like the rest of the Mike Balch for She...
To The Eagle: Having recently returned from a 44-day RV trip involving six states and three provinces, what a thrill it was to open a faucet and draw a glass of water that was fit to drink. Paul Vik, Puget Island...

My husband, son and I made an impromptu visit to our kids in Oregon this past weekend for a short visit and enjoyed some delicious pub food with some of their own brews at Smith Rock Brewing Company in Redmond. Our daughter, son-in-law, son and daughter-in-law will be celebrating their one year anniversary of opening on November 2 and the business has really turned out to be a huge success for them. They have purchased a building to increase their brewing capabilities and the new equipment will be here in about two weeks. They will be able to...
