    Rick Nelson|Oct 27, 2022

In a session that didn't end, Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday approved a variety of purchases and personnel moves and started meeting with department heads to discuss 2023 budget requests. Commissioners authorized the sheriff's department to pursue purchase of a surplus NOAA Fisheries aluminum patrol boat. Undersheriff Gary Howell said it appears the department is the leading bidder in the auction for the boat, but because it belongs to a federal agency, another federal agency could take priority and claim the boat. The bid stands at...

  • Couple brings leather work to Cathlamet

    Diana Zimmerman|Oct 27, 2022

It all started with a red purse. When Jasmine and Chris Riley were still dating, she was managing a little boutique in Eugene, and he was working for the state of Washington. She also was an instructor in health care, with a background in management. Enamored with a red purse in the shop, Jasmine talked about it frequently. What she didn't know was that Chris, who had never done any kind of leather work, had become quietly inspired. "He set out to make that red purse," Jasmine said. "He...

  • Halloween events set for Saturday and Monday

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 27, 2022

BACK AGAIN--I am back in the present, with both telephone and internet, at least for the moment. It was a quiet couple of weeks, which was fairly nice in one way, as those annoying campaign calls and other robo calls weren’t waking me up, but it sure is hard to gather news and write a column when you’re out in the sticks and have no way to communicate, or send a column in via email! WE GOT RAIN--As I begin my column, it is actually pretty decent out there. However, last Friday night, our rain gauge showed that we had almost an inch of the wet...

Song By Randy Newman - “I think it’s going to rain today” Broken windows and empty hallways A pale dead moon in the sky streaked with gray Human kindness is overflowing And I think it's going to rain today Scarecrows dressed in the latest styles With frozen smiles to chase love away Human kindness is overflowing And I think it's going to rain today Bright before me the signs implore me To help the needy and show them the way Human kindness is overflowing And I think it's going to rain today This describes my reality in the fall season of prepa...

  • From The Editor

    Rick Nelson|Oct 27, 2022

The election is coming, but not as fast as we thought at The Eagle. We have a policy of not printing campaign endorsement or similar letters in the last edition before an election, for a candidate who is attacked wouldn’t have a chance to respond. Thinking the election was coming sooner than it is, we told letter writers we wouldn’t run campaign letters this week. When one pointed out our error Wednesday morning, we decided to run the letters. As you can see, there are many, and because space is tight, we’ve cropped some of the extra...
