  • Tigers top Mules in league finale

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 27, 2011

The Wahkiakum Mules wrapped up their 2011 regular football season with a 40-7 win over the visiting Raymond Seagulls last Friday. Raymond took the opening kickoff and mounted an eight minute scoring drive to lead 7-0. From there, it was almost an all -Mule football game. The Mules responded with a scoring drive. Austin Good scored on a seven-yard run at 10:54 of the second quarter; a two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the Gulls ahead 7-6. Raymond mounted another drive deep into Wahkiakum territory, but the Mules held on downs inside...

"A turning point came in the last...

  • Have a safe and happy Halloween

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 27, 2011

HALF AND HALF--It was a so-so weekend with a soggy Saturday but a suitable Sunday; not exactly a sunny day but at least it wasn't raining, which made some outside work possible. Of course, with this being the last of October, I guess the rain shouldn't be so unexpected. As this work week began the sun was shining but temperatures were dropping, so with temperatures hovering in the 30s, we're definitely feeling that Fall nip in the air! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from October 27-November 2 are Jennifer Hall, Hoby Thacker, Mike...

  • School board okays softball field upgrade

    Ruby Murray|Oct 27, 2011

The Wahkiakum School District board met Tuesday for a short meeting and reviewed projects under way. More than half of kindergarten through third grade students at Julius Wendt Elementary school are eligible for free or reduced lunches, Superintendent Bob Garrett said. Sixty-four of 104 children in kindergarten through third grade receive free or reduced lunches, Garrett said. The district began to receive additional funding this year because of that population in the last school funding formula. Directors approved the refurbishing of the old...

  • Port District 1 votes to increase some fees

    Ruby Murray|Oct 27, 2011

Port District No. 1 commissioners voted to increase some fees and district property taxes collected to support the district at their meeting October 13. As they did last year, the commissioners voted to increase the property tax levy by 1 percent. Park employees Jackie Lea and Abe York will receive a 2½ percent salary increase. At present, the two employees’ health care is provided without cost to them. They select from among the health plans available to county employees. The 2011 budget was influenced by the strong spring chinook s...

  • County facing revenue shortfall

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 27, 2011

Wahkiakum County officials started discussion of preliminary 2012 budget requests this week knowing they have a big hole to address. The county will likely face a $450,000 revenue shortfall next year for the Current Expense Fund, which funds most courthouse departments, Treasurer Paula Holloway told department heads on Tuesday. A big part of that hole is a shortfall in state Criminal Justice Funds, which the state pays quarterly. In the first three quarters of 2011, the state had projected $283,000 revenue to the county, but actual payments...

  • Council election draws write-ins

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 27, 2011

Write-in candidates have surfaced for two of the Cathlamet Town Council positions on the November election ballot. Former mayor and council member Dick Swart announced Friday that he was running as a write-in candidate for position 3. Incumbent David Goodroe didn't file for re-election, and Angie Pugh, who filed during the regular filing period, has moved out of town and doesn't qualify for office as she is no longer a town resident, Swart said. Over the weekend, some Cathlamet residents received a letter announcing Swart's candidacy and also...

  • Artist creates cities, photographs with imagination

    Ruby Murray|Oct 27, 2011

It’s not surprising that Mike Cullom, who was born in Vader and lived in western Washington during his life, loves fog and finds it a subject for his photos. From his home on Puget Island, he takes pictures of what he sees. “Fog hugs the ground or it puffs in the trees,” he said. He enhances images digitally until he has created the impression he experienced. An exhibit of Cullom’s digitally enhanced photographs and miniature buildings begins Saturday at Redmen Hall in Skamokawa. Cullom, who has lived on the Island for seven years, retired...

  • Two good men step up for council

    Oct 27, 2011

To The Eagle: Citizens of Cathlamet should count themselves lucky: Two good men are seeking votes to fill seats on our Town Council. I am writing to endorse both of these individuals, based on their long records of laudable public service. Steve McNicholas, running as an incumbent in Position No. 1, works in the community’s interest in ways almost too numerous to list. He drives the trolley on market days and organizes volunteers to sweep streets, clean parks and help our elderly neighbors with simple home improvement. He supports our l...

  • Recommendation lacks information

    Oct 27, 2011

To The Eagle: I was surprised but also pleased to find out that Dick Swart was prepared to re-enter town governance. The news cam in separate letters to both my wife and myself. I was, at the time, perplexed by the recommendation for a write-in candidate to oppose Steve McNicholas; the letter providing no information or justification. I don't know anything about Dale Jacobson except that he may have been associated with some controversy over propane purchases. Mr. Jacobson might be a fine candidate for all I know. What surprised me though was...

  • What's Happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Oct 27, 2011

It’s been a cold and wet October at the Fairgrounds. This type of weather doesn’t bother Search and Rescue (SAR) members or their special dogs. The SAR met at the Fairgrounds last Sunday and held their dog training exercises. I was asked to be a track layer. This was something I didn’t know anything about, so was given instructions by Diane Morrow, the trainer for the six dogs in the SAR program. I was given a walkie talkie, a flag, some pink tape and four objects to hold so my scent was on them. Then I was shown where to start my track layin...

  • Halloween, Harvest Festival Saturday

    Oct 27, 2011

We enjoyed a wonderful unplanned trip to Redmond, Ore. this past weekend and celebrated our daughter’s 45th birthday with her and her family. She and her husband and our son and daughter in law are in the process of brewing beer and hopefully opening their own brewery soon, to be called “Smith Rock Brewery.” I had the pleasure of helping brew a new batch on Saturday. It’s an interesting process, and not as easy as I thought it would be. News from Naselle: The Naselle-Grays River Valley School District is now on Facebook. Bring the family and en...
