    On November 4 from 10 a.m. till noon, Cowlitz County Master Gardeners will teach inspiring crafts using traditional herbs to create holiday focal pieces. Each participant will have three projects they will complete and take home. Class size is limited to 21. You must pre-register and pay by November 1. The cost of the class is $15.   • Change in stream beds impacts salmon spawn

    A Washington State University researcher has found that the mating habits of salmon can alter the profile of stream beds, affecting the evolution of an entire watershed. His study is one of the first to quantitatively show that salmon can influence the shape of the land. Alex Fremier, lead author of the study and associate professor in the WSU School of the Environment, said female salmon "fluff" soil and gravel on a river bottom as they prepare their nests, or redds.   • Chess club hosting tournament

    The John Thomas Middle School Chess Club will host an open chess tournament on November 4. There will be four rounds of play. Registration runs 10-10:45 a.m., and rounds are at 11 a.m. and 12:30, 2:00 and 3:30 p.m. Games are limited to 30 minutes per side. There will be a trophy for first place and ribbons for second through fifth places. Entry fee is $5 for persons age 17 years and younger and $10 for 18 years and older. The win would mean the Mules would host the third place team out of the Mountain Division the following week in cross-over playoffs.     This week, the Wahkiakum Mules volleyball team split games with Kalama and Pe Ell. They played one more match on Wednesday after The Eagle went to press and begin district play on Saturday. Last Thursday, the Mules steadily improved their scores in each set of their loss to Kalama 8-25, 20-25, and 25-27.     The Naselle Comets improved their season record to 7-1, 5-0 in league play, with a 56-20 win over the Taholah Chitwins last weekend. The Comet ground game took control in the wet and windy conditions. Naselle scored twice in the first quarter for a 12-0 lead and three times in the second for a 40-0 halftime lead.     The Wahkiakum Mules cross country team competed in the Central 2B League Championships in Mossyrock last Thursday. Junior Leif Carroll was the sole Mule competitor in the 5,000 meter boy’s varsity race. He finished in 71st place with a time of 31:46.31. Freshman Ellie Hiatt led the Mule girls with a 25:10.1 time, taking 22nd place. Junior Chloe Wu finished with a time of 29:44.69, and took 41st place.
