  • Royals edge Mules on extra points

    The Wahkiakum Mules rallied from a two touchdown deficit only to fall short on extra points in a non-league 27-25 to the Portland Christian Royals last Friday. The Mules led 13-7 at halftime, but the visitors dominated play in the third quarter, scoring two touchdowns and their last on the first play of the fourth quarter to lead 27-14 with 11:53 to go in the game.     Brown and Kysar Engineers Erik Kysar and Ryan McMaster presented the Wahkiakum PUD with a system planning study for the years 2009-2023 in the PUD commission’s general meeting Tuesday. The study was assembled by the firm as a planning tool for the utility.   • Port 1 prepares $1 million budget

    Commissioners of Port District No. 1 of Wahkiakum County accpeted a preliminary budget totalling $1 million, when they met October 9. The commission will take final action on the budget at their November meeting. The port is planning a dock extension project that would total $308,925. State park and recreation funds will pay a share of the work; the port is matching $100,000.     “Fight, Mules, Fight! We’re here to win tonight!,” yell the Wahkiakum Cheerleaders during a recent practice. The group of ten girls jump, scream and perform stunts to keep the crowd motivated during football and basketball seasons. The girls usually practice two days a week for around 90 minutes, but that will depend on the weather.     Members and Friends of Extension met together Monday evening to review the Columbia River Country Days event held on October 3-4. The festivities raised approximately $5,800 to benefit the Wahkiakum Extension Service and the 4-H program for children and youth.     The Cathlamet Town Council reviewed the preliminary budget for 2009, voted to seek arbitration in a water rate disupte with Wahkiakum PUD and handle other business in its monthly meeting on Monday. Mayor Dick Swarr reported that he was requesting a budget with no growth, new projects and, other than state mandated minimum wages, no employee raises for 2009.
