On Monday, the Cathlamet Town Council unanimously passed a motion to enter into a contract with Wahkiakum County to reactivate the town's municipal court after approximately 10 years of inactivity. In addition, Public Works Superintendent David McNally updated the council about the town dock which is no longer accessible because of a temporarily removed gangway; he also reported that the sewer plant's ditch mixer has been damaged and solutions are being discussed; he is also waiting for quotes...

The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners learned about the PUD’s response to a recent storm and got a general update on projects at their meeting on Tuesday. A couple PUD employees who were headed into Cathlamet to pick up vehicles and equipment on October 10 to respond to outages during a storm found themselves stranded by a tree that had fallen across Elochoman Valley Road. Thanks to an assist from the Wahkiakum County Sheriff’s Department, who transported the stranded pair, they wer...
There have been some changes to this year’s Neewollah Festivities, which are set to begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, October 30. The event has been moved to the Wahkiakum High School parking lot for better safety and to provide room for social distance, Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce Interim Director Stacey Lane said. Families are invited to line the parade route, while remaining in their small groups, to watch vehicles and banner/flag walkers wind around the parking lot. Participants will then park i...

To The Eagle: I am writing to fully endorse Dan Cothern, Lee Tisher, Dean Takko and Brian Blake. I am asking for your vote and support for their elections. As a retired county commissioner and past president of the Washington state association of counties, it has been my honor to work for and serve all of our constituents alongside of this slate of candidates. I have watched Dan, Lee, Dean and Brian rise in their unwavering ability to examine and evaluate the problems facing us all and finding sensible working solutions regardless of any party...
To The Eagle: On every level of our Democratic Republic it is important to elect quality individuals who represent all of the people. Mike Backman has a proven record of serving the best interests of all of his constituents and the county. Mike is a true independent. That is, although strong in his convictions he keeps an open mind and listens to those who may disagree or have other points of view. Mike does not wear his partisan politics on his sleeve and/or delegitimize or disrespect others with different positions or views. He realizes that...
To The Eagle: I don't like to see out of control riots in our cities, where people are being badly hurt and businesses looted and destroyed while Democrat governors, mayors and district attorneys watch and do nothing to stop it. I don't care to live under Socialist/Communist government rule like the people of China, Cuba, North Korea, Venezuela and the rest of those horrid regimes. I love and respect our Constitution and want the Bill of Rights left intact for all of America's people. I don't think defunding our police makes any sense and will...
To The Eagle: Last week was filled with strange and wondrous landmarks in the annals of American journalism. On Tuesday, the New York Times reported that President Trump’s response to Covid-19 was efficient and effective, and the World Health Organization released a statement that lockdowns were medically ineffective and economically and socially disastrous, and we should use individual initiative and protect the most vulnerable instead. There is no known reason for the NY Times rare moment of truth and candor about Trump, but it is obvious t...
To The Eagle: Jaime Herrera Beutler is a complete hypocrite as well as a liar. She freely admits how many times she voted to strip 20 million Americans of health insurance. Now she has the audacity to proclaim herself as the champion and savior of all things health insurance. For who? Maybe the 1 percent. Certainly not the self employed, the small business, the farmer, hair stylist, service worker, laborer, the unemployed, and millions of others who do not work for large corporations or government entities. She tries to claim Carolyn Long will...
To The Eagle: I just received the most absurd political ad in the mail, among many absurd ones this year. It is from a group based in Puyallup, "WA Forward," saying that our Senator Dean Takko is an extremist. Say what? Anyone who knows Dean, or who has followed his career represeting us in Olympia, or who has seen him campaign in person or on YouTube knows that is laughable. Dean is a centrist problem-solver, quetly getting things done for us. Clearly these folks are outsiders who know nothing about LD19. So, I looked them up on the state PDC...
Because of an editing error, Jim Roberts’s letter to editor was printed incorrectly last week. The beginning should have stated: I wonder in utter amazement how anybody that claims faith can support the likes of our candidates. Easy for me to say as a recovering Christian. Even a lost and wondering lamb, such as myself, can tell which candidate seems less likely to further destroy what we once had....
Our dad climbed mountains; one foot in front of the other. No matter what he encountered in life, he tried the same approach: To him resting was an insult. After decades of severe heart and lung complications, and miraculously strong recoveries, he was genuinely bewildered as to why he felt tired and worn out at the age of 92. On Friday, September 25, 2020, Edward Gaidrich's body defied his spirit and mind. He sat in his easy chair, the day's mail in his lap, and for the final time, he did the...

SOGGY BEGINNING--As this week begins, it is definitely a dripping, dreary, sunless day! It's one of those days when the dampness seems to sink into your bones and it's time to add that extra layer of clothes or crank up the heat as the whole house seems chilly. From the sounds of it, we may have more dampness before you get this paper, and then, if we get lucky, we get a couple of decent days scattered in there in the next week, so we sure hope so! However, it's possible that temperatures take a real cold turn at the latter part of this week,...

Changes in the Westend: Only Time Will Tell It took over a thousand years of migration from western Asia to Egypt by the Hyksos (Shepherd Kings) to become the ruling majority and establish the 15th dynasty in Egypt from 1650-1550 BCE. This slow, progressive change would not even be noticed over time. Many of the Native American languages of the United States have all but disappeared with English becoming the dominant language. Much could be said of Wahkiakum and Pacific Counties. Finnish immigration was at its zenith during the years 1870-1930...

Grays River resident Patrick Shane Hargitt, 37, pled guilty to two counts of possession of depiction of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct in the first degree on July 6 before Judge Heidi Heywood in Wahkiakum Superior Court. On September 14, before Judge Donald Richter, he was sentenced to 29 months for each count, which will be served consecutively, followed by 36 months of probation. A cyber tip alerted authorities after several images and a video of suspected depictions of minors...
