  • Mules fall to MWP; head to Toutle Lake

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 18, 2012

How good are the number one ranked Morton/White Pass Timberwolves? Pretty darn good, if you asked the Wahkiakum Mules, who were victims of a 51-6 defeat at the hands of the T-wolves last Friday. Both teams entered the game with perfect 6-0 records. The experience the visitors carried with them--they finished second in the state 2B playoffs last year--paved the way to the lopsided win. "It was ugly," commented Mule Coach Eric Hansen. The Mules kicked off to the T-wolves, and on the first play, MWP quarterback Ryan Reynolds slipped on the wet...

  • Mules beat Loggers, lose to Tigers

    Oct 18, 2012

"Tough night for us tonight," commented Coach Kayli Hurley. "We just couldn't put it all together. Serve receive was especially rough." Tori Wegdahl had 10 kills and 15 service points. Marissa Washington had four kills and played well at the net, Hurley said, and Haylee Budd made 32 assists. The loss left the Mules with a 3-3 league record. Last Thursday, the...

  • Cross Country Results

    Oct 18, 2012

Mule cross country Coach Marie Riley was out of town this week, Heidi Heywood filled in and filed this report: Wahkiakum harriers capitalized on the last day of fall sunshine on October 11 at a meet hosted by Tenino. Tenino’s course was the second most challenging of the season thus far, but several runners posted some of their best times of the season. Middle school girls ran together with the boys in a total field of 59 runners. Shona Heywood had a very strong run, passing many runners on the course’s single steep hill to place third in the...

  • Spaghetti dinner to help local couple

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 18, 2012

WET AT LAST--Well, we wanted the rain, and we needed the rain and we got the rain, but we also got some winds with it, which we could have done without, but it's that time of year when we can expect these kinds of storms. Of course, this is not to say that we like them as after just a couple of days, I think we were missing all that sunshine we had. However, I think I could hear the field in front of my house going "glug, glug, glug" as it soaked up that rain and within just a couple of days, I had a nice fresh batch of green grass out there,...

  • Summit talks: Looking for rate relief

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 18, 2012

What can people and local government do to lower the rates for Cathlamet's sewer and water utilities? That was the subject of a summit meeting hosted Tuesday afternoon by the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce. Chamber members said the town's utility rates are hurting businesses and people on fixed incomes. Schedule increases will just make the problems worse and threaten the survival of some businesses. Discussion focused on two areas: 1. How to encourage more residences to connect to the sewer and water systems and share in the costs of...

  • PUD covers water connections, substation

    Betsy Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 18, 2012

Potential water customers have until the end of 2012 to take advantage of a fee waiver to encourage new water customers, Wahkiakum PUD commissions decided October 16. The commissioners voted not to extend the $3500 system development fee waiver currently in place. It will expire December 31 of this year. At their last meeting, the commissioners clarified that the waiver would be honored for new water customers who request work estimates and pay a deposit by the end of the year, even if the actual work is completed in 2013. Manager Dave...

  • Marine Recource group offers fish plan

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 18, 2012

The Wahkiakum County Marine Resource Committee (MRC) has suggested an addition to Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber's proposal to move gillnetting into the side channels of the Columbia River. The MRC has drafted a proposal suggesting that the Cathlamet Channel be classified and used for mixed use fisheries, if the Kitzhaber plan is adopted. Besides limiting gillnetting to side channels and select areas, the Kitzhaber plan would give recreational fishing priority fishing times on the mainstem. Selective commercial gear, which are still in the deve...

  • Fugitive caught in Chinook

    Oct 18, 2012

A man who escaped from the Clatsop County jail work crew about a month ago has been captured in Pacific County, Wahkiakum County Sheriff Jon Dearmore reported Tuesday. The suspect's name is Ron Legler, a former Wahkiakum County resident. Dearmore had little information about the arrest, other than it was without incident. Legler had been seen in the Rosburg area, and residents several times in the past two weeks reported other possible sitings from Fossil Creek Road to the Astoria/Megler bridge area, but when officers arrived, no one was...

  • Former Senator Sid Snyder dies at age 86

    Oct 18, 2012

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) -- Former Senate Majority Leader Sid Snyder died Sunday at his home in Long Beach. He was 86. Gov. Chris Gregoire said Snyder, a Democrat, was "legendary for getting things done and for his never-failing courtesy and civility." Snyder started work in Olympia in 1949 as an elevator operator at the Capitol and later moved on to become bill room supervisor. He was assistant chief clerk of the House for 12 years and spent 19 years as secretary of the Senate. In 1990, Snyder was appointed to a Senate seat after the death of...

  • DNR: County's timber trust revenues improve

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 18, 2012

Wahkiakum County's revenue from the harvest of time off state managed trust timberland will be better than anticipated this year, representatives of the state Department of Natural Resources reported Tuesday. The agency originally estimated the county's revenue off the Hayduke Sale on Bradley Mountain would generate $1.1 million for 2012. However, as the sale nears completion, the total will be closer to $1.375 million, said DNR District Manager Steve Ogden. Ogden attributed the increase to the DNR's new process for handling sales. The agency...

  • County prevails in biosolids suit

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 18, 2012

A Cowlitz County Superior Court judge last Friday ruled that Wahkiakum County's ordinance regulating the application of biosolids doesn't conflict with state law. Wahkiakum commissioners adopted the ordinance last year in response to a Seaview company's plan to spread Class B biosolids on a Grays River Valley ranch. Class B is the second of three grades of biosolids, or treated sewage. Valley residents opposed the project, saying it could lead to health problems. Under state law, the state Department of Ecology handles permitting of biosolids...

  • Congresswoman: Citizens come first

Christy Douglas Green, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 18, 2012

Jamie Herrera Beutler, southwest Washington’s member of the US House of Representatives, plans to continue, if reelected, with the philosophy that has guided her since she was elected in 2010. That philosophy, the Republican resident of Camas said in an interview earlier this month, is to keep the interests of the people of her district and state first and foremost even if that means joining forces with Democrats to do so. Herrera Beutler was raised in Southwest Washington, and in her early childhood years she was home-schooled by her m...

  • Support Proposition 74 for marriage equality

    Oct 18, 2012

To The Eagle: Re: marriage equality. We have two married daughters. One was married in Iowa and lives in Texas where her marriage is considered valid. The other was married in Massachusetts and lives in Washington where her marriage is not considered valid. This is not fair and I want justice for both girls and their marriages. Therefore I support Proposition 74 that provides marital equality. Carol A. Kriesel Cathlamet...

  • Reed supports Wyman for secretary of state

    Oct 18, 2012

To The Eagle: Wahkiakum County Auditor Diane Tischer and I enthusiastically support Kim Wyman for Secretary of State. As your Secretary of State for the past 12 years, I fully understand the qualities needed to serve successfully in that position. It’s not a matter of political party preference. Instead, it’s the ability to rise above party and oversee elections and the other office functions in a fair, non-partisan way. Kim Wyman has demonstrated that quality for twelve years as the Thurston County Auditor. She is endorsed by 66 present and...

  • Let's not lose two commissioners

    Oct 18, 2012

To The Eagle: As your ballots are mailed out this week, I take the liberty of reminding all that every vote counts and what a privilege we have in our country to do so. There are many problems with our system as we all know, but I know of none better. On our local election, I point out a problem in our county commissioner elections. The current terms are four years rather than three or six years. That means that two commissioners come up for election at the same time. This creates the possibility of losing two experience commissioners at the...

  • Healy brings ability, experience to PUD post

    Oct 18, 2012

To The Eagle: I am writing to encourage your readers to join me in voting for Gene Healy as Wahkiakum PUD Commissioner, District #1. We need to retain Gene in this leadership position because of his experience, his ability and his decency. I served with Gene on the Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church Council. Gene would always provide leadership by asking meaningful questions that brought our focus to the big picture and prompted insightful discussions. I was very pleased when Gene sought to serve our community by offering to complete Larry R...

  • Grays River Grange forum shows candidates need to focus on wider range of issues

    Oct 18, 2012

To The Eagle: First I want to thank the Grays River Grange for hosting the candidate forum and the generous grangers for providing delectable snacks - the fresh bread was spectacular! Not surprisingly, the principal local issues addressed by the candidates were the faltering economy and the concomitant loss of jobs, the education of our children, and taxes/budgets. Sadly, none of the candidates offered fresh insights or new solutions. Political party preferences were easily detectable as specific candidates short-sightedly blamed the demise of...

  • Candidate forum made choices clear

    Oct 18, 2012

To The Eagle: 'Tis the season of high political theatre and the first two presidential debates did indeed provide great drama with President Obama doing a dispirited defense of the indefensible and Vice President Biden attempting to avoid defending the indefensible with a squirming, eye-rolling, interrupting tantrum worthy of a five-year-old, (apologies to any five-year-old who may be reading this.) Our own candidate forum in Grays River last week was more sedate, but it had its entertaining moments and provided some really clear distinctions...
